i got pulled over by an under cover cop for doing that yesterday.
called me ace ventura then told me to keep my hands and arms inside the 'auto mobile' at all times.
yet at this time 3 cars doing well over 60 in a 30 zone shot past and what did he do. NOWT!
w@nkers all cops are!

its supposed to drink loads of petrol,
and when they go faulty, they are very difficult to put right again.

open windows = ambient/outside air, altho at high speeds can be rather cold
ac = well...same as a building ac, the air comes out quicker, not sure how it works, kinda bores me lol, but prolly like a fridge, with compressed air or summat like that Zzzzzz

so how does this make ur car drink lotsa petrol?
and it comes outta the vents right? so isnt it just same as settin temp on cold and turnin the fan on?

it's much colder than turning fans on full on coldest setting been a life saver recently
as for the petrol, not sure how or why, just heard it does, but I presume it's becoz it puts a heavy load on the system when u have it on.

like someone said its kinda like a compressor from a fridge but its bolted onto the engine... basically takes air from outside and compresses it and cools it then pumps it into the cabin of the car through the vents. It affects the performance of your car and drinks more petrol coz the compressor runs off the engine so when you run the a/c some of the engine power is being lost to power the compressor. Geddit ??
a/c doesnt just do cold tho, it will do any temp you set it at and the air it pumps is very dry so is great for de-misting your windows too...

The temperature is actually lowered using absorbtion of the heat when a refrigerant expands and evaporates after being compressed by the compressor and then passed in to the low pressure part of the system. And yes, running a compressor is a bit of a strain on your engine, hence you loose a bit of power and drink a bit more fuel.
It works better if your windows are shut and you recirculate the air in the car using the slider as you're cooling air thats already cold and none is escaping and being replaced by outside air which is warmer.

I was thinking of putting A/C in my Astra, but I got quoted about £2k to install it from one place, didn't bother phoning up anywhere else for quotes after that, kind of put me off!
Cheaper just to sell my car and get an Astra CDX or something that has it as standard.
Maybe I should get the portable A/C machine that I'm planning on buying for home soon, and coupled with some kind of power inverter/transformer thing, use it in my car plugged in to the cigarette lighter!
£300 better than £2000!
