Is there a purpose to the 'padding' on the underside of the bonnet? I thought it could be heatshielding material or sound deadening? I want to rip it out ideally, but if its there for a good reason it had better stay

Yeah course it's sound deadening. Corsa's get that bloody hot, you wouldn't wanna try and keep it in the engine bay intentionally.
