The more i learn about them, the more im fascinated by how amazingly well they were designed!!
They have a flap simply operated on airflow in the air inlet on the airbox that remains closed to draw the warm air from the engine bay when cold until you pull off then it opens drawing cold air from straight outside when the engine is at running temp.
There is a layer of oil that you have to put in the airbox to extract dust from the air going to the carb. Simple but effective and the cars are still running after 30 years - more than i can say for most conventional engines.

They have a tendency for that - if their well looked after though and have a oil pressure or temp gauge they are ok.
Recons are cheap.
