When I bought my car I had to get the cover note sent to the garage so they could get my road tax and I couldnt take the car untill they had done this.

They would probably either let you off, or make you take documents to nearest station once they come through - just to make sure your telling the truth.
What if you crash tho - the I nsurance could refuse to pay on the basis of you NOT having road tax.

thats what i was saying, but as u cant get tax untill the cover note comes, then u cant drive the car until insurance documents come through.

Agree, just wait untill monday if you still havnt got it phone the insurance company and get them to fax a copy of the cover not to you - then you can get your tax.
You could just ignore this advice and drive your car before then and get away with it. If you get caught the fine could be up to £1K

Err, no you can't. You can't even have a vehicle parked on a public highway was no valid tax disc showing.
If the tax expires on a Friday, theres no excuse for leaving it until Monday to renew it. (but we've all done it )
Maximum fine is indeed £1000 although its got to be an extreme case to be hit with that. More realisically, you can be fined a percentage for each month the disc is out of date by.
Insurance should still be valid without a current tax disc, although lack of MOT will make it void.
