When i take my car to 6000rpm, on gear change when i take my foot briefly off the throttle, a loud squeal can be heard. Its always done this. Any ideas?

A squealing noise usually means a worn belt

its approaching 40k miles so the timing belt needs changing for a newer item. The drivebelt runs the alternator right? Is it serious enough to warrant immediate attention?
