USB ADSL modems aren't amazingly reliable, and they pull power from your machine (standard way that USB works), so if your PSU (power-supply) isn't powerful enough, there's problems already...
Get yourself a decent router, go with an ISP that supports a wires-only connection (ie. you buy your own kit)......again, someone like Nildram or Zen!

A router is a stand-alone piece of kit, which when combined with a built-in modem (not all of them come with one, make sure you read up on the model you're getting), keep your ADSL connection alive without the need for your computer to be left on 24/7 (just leave the router plugged in and powered up, it uses minimal power).
Most routers also come with a built-in hub (or more preferable, a switch), which provides the connectivity for your network. The one I've got (D-Link DSL-504) has a built-in modem, and a 4-port switch (4 computers can be plugged into it, and use the 'net at the same time), and I've found it to be very reliable so far...

i got the Netgear DG814. It is good and has been switched on for the last three months and hasn't disconected.
I paid £70 for it. RRP is £120. I wouldnt pay that for it though

yea but remember alot of the companies wont support modems/routers they dont offer. Like pipex, they will only FULLY support the BT router and the alcatel modem...otherwise they will just give you the settings and get you to go through a number of things to check if its your line etc.
So, if you want it simple just get one from your ISP and double check that they will support it fully if you ever get problems i used to work for tech support and ISPs cant offer support for every modem/router that is available. However, you may find that some in technical support will use that modem or have a rough idea and may beable to give you pointers etc.

yea sorry, its £23.44 a month (inc vat) and a 17 quid setup fee...but still good service Give em' a ring anyways, it wont hurt

im on NTL broardband. jus got a ethernet cable plugged in2 the back of my digi box running to my pc! was so simple 2 set up. i pay £25 a month for 600kbs connection! dnt really have problems with it although sometimes it freezes and i have 2 re-set my set top box. not really worth it if ur not on NTL tho

www.getadsl.co.uk, Nildrams website. They seem to be getting very good reviews for service and customer care, pretty cheap and they also do 1mb and 2mb home services.

I think i will go for Nildram, but £50 activation fee and then £90 for a modem
I only got paided friday and im already eating big chunks into it Plus im taking the missus to paris the end of the month, ouch

ive been with PIPEX since they released b/band nearly 2 yrs ago ive had no problems service is wicked and they do 1megabit connection

you can get modems a lot cheaper, have a look at www.ebuyer.com for modems and routers. Im not sure if you have to get one off them or not as i havent read the terms and conditions, but if not, then its worth a look.

Trust me there the best to go with at the moment , dont tget there router/modem as its saggy pants , get the netgear one i pionted out , is top , and its got a 4 port hub and ill get you an ethernet card and put it all in for you, im with them and there speed is really good.
