Looking to have a holiday with the Mrs in NYC towards the back end of this year.
I've never been before, so I've no idea where to stay or what i should be spending. I realise that it won't be a cheap holiday, however, i don't want to have my pants pulled down on the price.
It'll probably be a 7 or 10 night stay i would have thought, and if possible, I don't want to stay in a shit hole which I miles and miles from everywhere. Rough guess, i'd say that £1500 for flights and hotel would be ok.
I'll also be looking at places like Expedia and high street travel agents, but i thought I'd ask on here, just so that I can get flamed for advertising that I have money to spend on a holiday to NYC

Not sure the link will work, but have a look on that website, always seem to be good deals

I paid £750 for 7 nights at the Roosevelt hotel including flights with BA. The hotel is right by Grand Central Terminal so very easy to get around. Get a weekly subway pass for like £20.
That was in March though which isn't peak time by any means.

I'd look at hotels in the midtown area, that's fairly central.
Also, I wouldn't bother going for 10 days, we had 8 full days and on the last day we ended up going to the cinema as we had done everything we wanted to do.

Yeah, i thought 7 days might be enough also. I tend to want to come home after only a few anyway
Cheers for the advice

We booked through Expedia, sometimes they have offers with x% off a particular hotel. We just looked through and chose the one that had the biggest discount and booked that.
Hotel was ok - needs modernising though.

Nip into any travel agents and nab a travel mag, have a look at the hotels on there and find one that looks nice. Or compare the hotels from cheap deals to the ones in the mag.
We went a few years ago but I was quite young so can't remember where we stayed or much we did apart from Empire State Building

We didn't do Empire State, the reason being is that Rockefeller Centre and Empire State are basically the same, but the advantage of doing the Rockefeller Centre is that the Empire State Building is in all your photos

Also, have a night out in Greenwich village and do one of the proper boat tours out to the Statue of Liberty, you get to see loads.

Am I right in thinking the Statue of Liberty has opened back up now (closed after 9/11, at least part of it was)?

I stayed in this hotel -
http://www.marriott.co.uk/hotels/hotel-information/travel/ewrnw-courtyard-jersey-city-newport/
Its next door to the PATH station which gives you access to WTC, Christopher Street, 9th, 14th, 23rd and 33rd Streets which is basically every starting point for walking anywhere in NYC that you need.
Its a short walk away from the ferry terminal which also takes you to near the WTC site.
There's an Italian restaurant next door, an Irish bar over the road, a massive shopping centre half a block away, its got a pool and jacuzzi, a little shop, a bar and internet access.
I actually couldn't think of any way it could be better.
Buy some good walking shoes though - I just wanted to walk and walk, there's so much to see. I loved it.

you can go to the island
Each day they release so many tickets for you to enter the base of the statue - still cannot go up the statue though
In all honesty visiting the island is plenty enough and you get good views of Manhattan

do this in the day and Rockerfella at dusk as you see the city going into night-time with the lights etc
Book your Rockefella tickets in advance as they sell time slots - i.e you might que up at 1400and but the time slot is for 1730
where as the empire state is que up and go up whenever you lile
I would do both
Walk across Brooklyn bridge also and Ground zero with its 2 waterfalls is something to see although the place has a very weird feeling to it

Agreed.
Regarding Statue of Liberty I can recommend going on the free ferry to Staten Island, as it takes you right by the statue.
Don't bother spending time on the island though, it pretty much sucks.

My brother and I are taking the old man for his birthday in March as a surprise. Should be fun, nothing booked yet though.

Very cool pics!
Did you visit any of those ghetto areas?
Might be a silly question, but is it better to visit NYC in the winter or summer?

I have only ever been in the winter - first time in Nov for Thanks giving and then every year for New years Eve
Meant to be good in the summer but I prefer it when its cold
Plus from oct to Feb they have the ice skating in central park - thanks giving in Nov etc
however can imagine its awesome in summer
Last year we spent alot of time in China town, Little Italy etc as we have all the tourists things
