Right Im ordering broadband today through PIPEX......

Just not sure whether to get the 512kb or 1mb......

I will be at work during the day and just leave it downloading, and then go on it on a night now and again when I get time. Next year it will probably be used for gameing.

So

512kb

£17.57 set up fee including Free Modem
£23.44 a month

You can upgrade to 1mb at a later date for £40ish I think it is.

1mb
£52.88 set up fee including free modem
£33.99 a month

What do you think I should do?? - I wanna be able to download music/films etc.... during the day and want them done when I get home.

Thanks
Daz

Mt Girlfriend will be paying £15 towards it as she used to pay for Dial Up, and its me that wants the broadband so she said she will still pay what she was, and I would have to pay the extra.....

So I would be paying.

512kb - £8.44
1mb - £18.99

Dunno what to do, im only used to 56kb so people are saying I would just be happy with the 512kb

ive been on 512 for almost 2 1/2 years, and im starting to want something a bit quicker now. Films take about4 hours to download at full rate, so its not too bad really. Plus my connection is shared with sister and her bf, and i use it a LOT!

512 is about 3.3MB per minute, 1mb is twice that obviously!

Right I have ordered the 512kb one should be here in about 10-15 days....

They said if I feel its not fast enough then I can upgrade to the 1mb one for £40ish, which is the saving im making in the conection now.....

So hopefully I should be joining the broadband revolution soon

i dred when i go home from uni over x-mas back to the dreded 56k which runs at 32000

ive got a 512k line at uni, but i tell u now, u will never download anything at 512k, infact nowhere near that, even slower if ur downloading of someone rather than a server

its all about how fast the other person can upload, which is usualy crap, but u will love 512k comapred to 56k

512 is the rated speed in kilobits per second, transfer speeds are usually measured in kilobytes per second. 8 bits in a byte, so 512/8 is 64. So running at full speed, a 512 line will download at 64kB/s. I usually get around 59 or 60, so its not far off full speed.

Its not a case of pipex unpluging there end from a 576k line and switching it to a 1mb line

First of all to have 1mb u need to live within 3.5 miles of your local telephone exchange. This differs from DSL now as orgnially 576k needed to be within 5km, now it can be as far as 10km away from the exchange

If you fall with in the 3.5 mile area, then Pipex will have to submit a DSL line cancilation to BT wholesale, who will then cancil your DSL and remove you from the exchange, Then Pipex will have to fill another order in to bt wholesale, who will then reacitvate your line and plug you in the 1mb exchange..... normally this takes 6 weeks.....

6 weeks? Pipex are a little slow, then, we used to give 7-10 working days as a lead-time where I used to work. So that's looking at 2 weeks, at the most....

Yeah, I've read all the Pipex "horror stories" on ADSL Guide......they only seem to be exceptionally bad when it comes to changing speeds or leaving them.
