Cheap insurance, as for tuning the same as anyother car really.. there's loads of bits you can do..
Chip
Cams
filter
exhaust
Turbo ????
Loads just depends on the money flow situation

Why do the astras have less power?

the c20XE can be put in the mk4, but there are other alternatives from the mk4 range like the excellent 2.2 or the 2.0 turbo lump. The 1.6 is Z16XEV and has 100bhp. Loosely based on the infamous 16XE from the corsa, but with a more restrictive inlet to reduce power and increase economy

so i could see nice gains from solving the intake problem??
2.2 lump would be good. turbo too pricey on insurance

Yes c20 conversion is possible... the mk4 astra is lovely to drive around town compared to my gti... and id prefer it on a long distance journey to be honest as its got good top end pull for motorways... handles wicked as well

ive had 2xastra sxi 1.6 16v.
get an sxi for the close ratio box
i made a custom air filter and intake pipe for mine, rolling roaded at 117.5bhp. a nice decat exhaust system, possible chip, or if ya got money get like a mantzel power box, should be making tidy bhp then.
i love the cars, really comfortable, good cruiser on the m-way and equally as good round town. also uses about the same amount of juice as my corsa c 1.4 sri.
my mam has a 1.8 coupe astra se2, and it pisses over my mates slightly tuned 106 gti, suprised me!

I had a 2.2 16v SRi as a company car for a while.
Compared to their pre-decessor (mk3 2.0 16v), the engine is pish. Interior was cack, handled pretty shabby but........
...brakes were excellent + it looked smart!!
I was gonna go for a 1.8 16v Astra Sport before i drove that car.
Still good for what they are, but when i asked, all the ppl on the astra-sport forum said go for the 1.8 16v over the 1.6....only a slight difference in insurance, but swifter and nicer to drive!! U'd regret it other wise. :s although having never driven either of these, its not personal opinion on these engines.

try and get a 1.8 or above if you can mate, insurance aint to bad i think the 1.8 sri is group 9 which is wot i drive and performance is quite good, interiors dull but you get used to it, styling wise they look good but i think only the 2.0 and 2.2 get the side skirts and front splitter colour coded which looks better. if you cant afford an sri then get the sport, pretty much the same same except they get 15's and no spioler.overall great cars and like corsa nuts they can be made to look real sweet

Yep agreed the 1.8 16V sport or SRI's are really the ones to go for as the insurance aint much different.
SRI is a group higher though for some daft reason
