Well go for looks then. If you want power, it costs.
If you want it badly enough, you'll find the money!

I am a little biased cos I drive a 106 gti but prior to buying I was trying 2 choose between at that exact same line up!
For a little breakdown:
The Clio 1.8 16v is actually slightly slower than the 106 and because of age etc can be quite expensive... the 5 GT Turbo unless you get a minter WILL blow up! The Punto GT is very fast on the move, if you compare its 30-50 to all those others I think it has the edge - but it handles like a tank! The Escort RS Turbo is just toooooo pikey, The Civic vti is a fantastic car and my numero uno choice... tons of parts avaliable but I was put off by insurance group 15! The 106 rallye is fantastic too drive but a little basic and a tuned up corsa 1.6 16v is nice but ultimately not as nice as a tuned up corsa 2.0 16v
Sorry for the essay!

Not bein funny mate but the r5 engines are actually very good, the only reason you here of so many blowing up is because people turn the boost right up without uprating any of the engine components eg head gasket turbo etc. If you keep them at sensible boost or upgrade the engine according to boost they are still very reliable, also they tend to get abused, they need to have regulat oil chnges and services.
oh and by the way i would go for the 106, but i am just biased as i have just bought one i also have an r5 turbo too

If you want reliabilty and performance, the Civic all the way..
You cant really use Pug and reliability in the same sentance (or any french car come to that)
Even VW's dont compare to the Hondas for reliability..
Ive had two golf Gti's
First one: - headgasket, shocks, driveshaft.
Second one - Headgasket, shocks, wishbone, 2 seized calipers..
Two Hondas'
1. Prelude - total cost in two years and 35k miles of ownership £28 for new bush in suspension inc fitting..revved to 7800rpm EVERY day
2. Integra 20k miles total cost in repairs... nothing

nup for £3500-4000 you will get a minter 16v that bn well looked after, std for std theres nothing in it between 16v and gti, but 16v is slightly quicker top end
id get a clio 16v, errr well i did i got mine for £3000 with mods, do your research tho because if you buy a 'bad' one it will cost you £££

they are however not very 'hot' unless you have the 160bhp version
