No it is a joke!! And how can they nick you for carrying a bald tyre?? There is no legal requirements governing the carrying of a spare tyre/wheel other than that if hung below the car it must be secure. It can be bald flat or anything else it makes no difference!

I am an MOT tester and the spare wheel and tyre is nothing to do with an MOT whatsoever. There is no legal requirement to carry a spare wheel/tyre and the cops cannot do a thing if they decide to look at it. Even if you have one and its totally bald. its fine, even if you dont have one, its fine

must have the legal amount of tread to be legally USEABLE.
Coppers wont ever check ur spare tyre FFS and because its not on the car they cant nick you for it.
So basically ur saying if i blew a tyre on the M4 and coppers had to assist getting me off motorway, they would check my spare and nick me cos it was bald or damaged, even though i carry an AA card for times like those???!?!?

if you have a spare in the car it has to be of useable tire tread, because if you had to put it on, you'd be breaking the law, num nuts

then take it out the car. the police would not pull you over specificly to check your spare, but if you get arsey and they are determined to book you for something, they can book you for illegal spare wheel/tyre.

bastard - only cause offside wouldn't adjust (my fault for over turning it) - don't matter tho, cause i had to replace the nearside headlight unit before MOT cause it was cracked - so had a spare motor, 5 mins job and I'm back in there tomorrow for 8:30 for my "full" re-test and hopefully a year worth of MOT!!!

he he thanks - MOT has set me back over £200 which i was expecting considering it's an old 1995 with almost 120,000 on the clock.
New backbox (piper 3.5" o/w rolled) was £100 + £15 fitting.
2 New trackrod ends and laser tracking = £85
new headlight = £20 + £10 aiming
then £35 for the test!
Not good have it in janurary - in so much debt from christmas and haven't been paid for ages!

Only tyres fitted to the car are checked in an MOT, a spare having to have legal tread is a bit of an old wives tale.
All an MOT testing centre can do is notify you if the spare has an illegal tyre, they cannot fail you for it.
