Just bought a new computer from a independent shop. I asked for an AMD Athlon 2600 XP 333FSB processer, and this is the exact product that has appeared on the reciept. However I just turned on the comp and went into device mananger and it says - that the processer is - AMD Athlon 2000XP +.
I rung up the place and they said i had to adjust my bios settings to up the rate to 2600. But as i understand that is overclocking a 2000XP chip rather than them having provided me with a 2600 processer. Have they ripped me off or what? Help needed urgently. Cheers.

just hit del button when you turn it on, on the memory test page

some boards don't pick up the real FSB of the chip, so you may need to adjust it...
If in doubt, take off the heatsink from the chip & have a look at the stepping, it will tell you what speed it actually is there...
this is the stepping on the 2600 XP-M
AXMG2600FQQ4C / IQYHA0348XPMW
The bold bit is what speed it is. If yours doesn't say 2600, then complain!

i *think* the settings for the 2600+XP are...
FSB - 166
Multiplier - 12.5 (it will be locked anyway)
vcore I think is 1.65v

Use a small flat-edged screwdriver to unclip the heatsink from the cpu socket, but be careful not to let the screwdriver slip!

you can play with the BIOS settings as much as ytou want, but to see what it really is, the only way is to look at the chip itself

rite i'll ava go now. thanks. Also it seems bloody noisy to me. Its got 3 fans mounted in the case and one over the CPU. Does it really need all these fans? Can u get ultra quiet ones?

AMD's run pretty hot as standard, around 60C...
guessing 1 fan at front, 2 at rear?? make sure the rears are blowing air out & the front is sucking air in

u have got it all wrong, The processor needs to be running at 266MHz fsb, if u cant change it in the bios then u have to change the jumper settings.
To change the settings in the bios u pres delete when it prmpts u to when u turn the pc on. In the bios u need to find an option that starts with chipset, it varies with motherboards in names. Then once u actually locate the fsb settings it should be set at 266fsb as it is a 333fsb, this then will make ure processor will be shown as a 2600 running at 2083MHz

It wouldnt matter if your FSB was set differently, the type of processor wouldnt change in device manager.
I reckon you've been robbed.

well i'm going down there now and am gonna ask to see the actual chip inside my computer and read the model number of it. Peace of mind that way.

It tells you the name of the processor on the BIOS setup as well as soon as you turn the computer on so see if it says XP2000+ there as well.
Im 99% sure that if it says XP2000+ in Device Manager thats what you've got in like. No way it would change depending on what your FSB is set at.

on some motherboards it only goes off the fsb in the BIOS, the device manager goes off the bios and hence why it would detect it as a 2000, im telling u to change the fsb!!
I work with computers every day, it will be the fsb, we will find out when he gets back from the shop anyway!!

whoa there paul!!! 60 is WAY too hot matey. I have an athlon 2200 running at about 1900mhz, not much but better than stock, and its running at about 42 degrees underload and 39 idle. Case sits at about 31-32 degrees all day long. You might want to think about a new fan, look at a Thermaltake Volcano9 with copper heatsink. Also put a fair bit of thermal paste on chip and you should get cooler, if your case is running hot too, look at an exhaust which sucks a fair bit of hot air from the case. Noisy though.

koolcorsa, as long as you know you have a compatible motherboard, fitting a 2600 processor should immediately show up on the boot-up screen, fiddling with voltages and FSB will not change from an XP2000 to a 2600. XP2000 run at about 1650mhz, and the 2600 is about 2.2ghz, that would be a serious amount of overclocking and your chip will fry easy.
