the sri mpi will be marginally quicker but really there no point for all the work involved, yeh its more or less a straight swap but changing an engine is still a big job

The block is the same, and probably the head, and exhaust manifold. You only need to change the inlet manifold, and wiring loom I think to convert it. The fuel lines may need altering, or the fuel pump.

Interestingly, the 16v model uses the same block aswell.

The 1.4 8valve is a good block and will piss on an spi 1.4

also good performance for cost of insurance/tax, dont get the 16valve read posts about quotations for head work etc....

8valve sri all the way if you dont want the 1.6 gsi engine!

I have the 1.4 Spi in my car and my dad used to have the 1.4 Mpi (sri) engine in his astra and there are quite a few differences. For a start it has one small valve and one large valve per cylinder but I think both are bigger than in the Spi and the compression is higher, which could be down to the head or the block. It's a dam good engine and used to make the astra go like a rocket for a 1.4.

ah if u cant afford insurance on a 1.6 or 2.0 lump at least stretch to the 1.4 16v.

Or its just a complete waste of time and money!

don't listen to them

the 1.4 16v needs to be revved more for the power, and there aint a lot of difference between them.

I've had my car raced alongside the 16v version too.

My 8v is a real nice responsive car wudnt trade it for a 16v....

Yea, 16vs are alright in the revs, but sluggish. Been driving mums 1.2 16v Clio, and feels slower than my 1.2 8v

I'd have a near standard 8v over a near standard 16v any day, pulls harder and more fun to drive, get a backbox, the rest of the exhaust seems a reasonable size for the engine, a nice cone filter (bigger the better) and you have the sound aswell, from this 90bhp/90Ib/ft is nice in a light car especially when you have a nice close ratio gearbox(youll need that as well) and the peak torque is below 3000rpm (mine) lower it on some nice 15' wheels with 195/45 tyres and that is a very quick, but cheap to run car!

how can you say it pulls harder, the 16v engine pulls better than the 8v, has more bhp and torque to prove it too
