if it has a cat it wont do it mate, you have to have unburnt fuel in the exhaust to make it work.

If you have no CAT then ya can try -
Either, keep revving high, turn the car off (keep revvin motion goin) and turn the car back on, shud do it.
Or keep revving high and then when ya let ya foot off, give it little blips and it shud do it then.
There are the only way av ever done it mate

GCM, that only works on carbs, as soon as u turn the ignition off the injectors stop working thus = no fuel

ive tried the blipping thing, all it does is do small little pops

I have a cat on the ibiza and it pops and bangs. Only does it when it's warm and when I change up early.

Mine 1.4 sport backfires when i accelerate hard till bout 4,500rpm then quickly change up gears it makes a loud bang. I still got my CAT too. mines a 2.5"(i think) bore straight through, doesnt all the time but when i get it just right it sounds sweet.!!!
took about 3months before it started popping tho the guy at exhautsuk sed it will start to do it when the exhaust gets lined with carbon or summat and the unburnt fuel + carbon explodes coz of the heat in the exhaust.

i thought u could only backfire a carb'd car as when u turn the ignition off the pump cuts off and therefore no petrol getting through

The 1.2 SPi can't really put enough fuel in to make it go bang. popping in the exhaust is usually caused by air leaks in the system. If you want it to bang then buy a spare CTS and put connect it to the ecu but no in to the head then it will overfuel and you might do it. Got to say it bloody annoying after a while, esp on twin carbs on over run.
Good luck trying anyway.
