Finally found the fault.......
NOT the ECU
NOT the ICV
........ a hole in the Air Inlet Pipe, sucking in lots of air and causing the ECU to throw out allsorts.

cool, recently me and Kez cleaned my air flow meter with carb cleaner, made a shit load of difference to my idle etc

Pipes should be one of the first things you check - dafty
At least its not going to cost £250 to fix now

Ive just cleaned my ICV and it made no difference to my sh*te idle!
so where is the air flow meter???
ive got a 1.4 (x14xe)
help please

Its between metal bits after airbox/induction kit before air flow pipe

so how do you clean it? and is it hard to remove? will petrol do instead of carb cleaner?

its a maze under the bonnet of the Gsi.
one good thing about the 1.0 pish easy to work on.
Gona cost about £100, needs a new gasket for inlet manifold also?!

if you cant find a carb cleaner.... any solvent based cleaner will do.... just give it a good spray.....
you may as well clean all breather pipes, your throttle body etc too

best way of cleaning the airways is to strip the airflow meter down clean with carb cleaner and while the car is running spray carb cleaner into the inlet but apply revs at the same time and dont be put off by it cutting out
bet id of known it was a split in air pipe

nah, mines not a gsi, its a 1.4 16v sport,so it must be different, but the idle is lumpy as fcuk
so how do i clean my inlet/ air flow meter? maybe just some carb cleaner and a bit of throttle?

my haynes is 98-2000
is the ecotec 1.6 the same engine? looks simular tbh.
