Can't go wrong with a set of Technics 1210's... hardly lose their value so you'll always be able to sell.
Every bar or club I've ever played uses them too, so if you get good you'll always likely to know the decks in a venue...
Some places are moving over to Vestax nowadays, and to be honest, they are a better deck once you get used to em...

Technics 1210s all the way.
If you DON'T buy 1210s make sure you buy Vestax - as if you ever get to use 1210s you won't want to go back to whatever it is you bought instead!

I paid £1170 for two 1210s, a Vestax PCV-175 mixer and Sony MDV-V700 Headphones. Cost me my entire siummer wages back in the day. Second most expensive thing I've bought (car) and have never once regretted it. I think there with me for life.
On my second Vestax mixer though as the first one broke
I'd highly recommend expensive headphones - you need the clarity and its also how you'll be listening to the music being the DJ - so invest
I started with a £440 Citronic kit - two PD1 decks and a MSX 1 Mixer - great value and did everythng I needed as I was learning. I then used a pair of 1210s and had to invest
It was a logical progression.

Oh, one last thing - if you buy new, buy a copy of DJ Mag, but it from London - the cheapest is places like Sapphires Sound & Light - they offer free delivery - next day and price match.

the usual needle, crap build up under the plate, head capsual....nothing mega. Unless the motor has gone etc. Pitch fader could also be abit mucky...but im sure you can get replacments and stuff
1210s are pretty solid bastards....so it will take alot of crap before they go tits up

1210's all the way IMO - as already mentioned they're basically industry standard, solid as a rock and pretty much faultless - winner!
I upgraded mine recently as I had some cheapo direct drive jobbies so I now have:
1 x cheapo shitty deck
1 x 1210 Mk5
Vestax PCV-275 3ch mixer and some Pioneer HDJ-1000 headphones
The difference between the 2 decks is unreal, just need another £400 to replace the other one now!

Records can be bought all over the place - generally speaking though your best bet is either the internet or a good local independant shop.
eg:
Juno - http://www.juno.co.uk
Chemical Records - http://www.chemical-records.co.uk
Prices vary really - usually between £5-8 per record generally speaking but can pay loooads for rare/old/ltd promo stuff. (Worst I've paid is £40 for 1 record and it had 1 song on it )
As for actually doing it, if its just a bit of a phase then start with one of the starter packs - usually about £200-300. This'll give you a pair of decks (often belt drive though ) a mixer, some 'phones and the leads you need.
To be brutally honest at first it seems very hard! Buuut, the concept is easy enough and it's all down to practise really. Some people pick it up quickly, others not so... Tis good fun though IMO and if you're into your music then great stuff

Well often it's 1 record with 2-4 different mixes on it. Your collection does take a while to build up obviously - thats part of the fun though but yes be warned, if you do get quite into it, it's not a cheap hobby.
Equipment-wise, have a good gander on here mate, will answer lots of questions... http://www.djstore.co.uk
