i know absoloutley nothing about pc's (spec etc...)
need a new one as mine is getting kind of old & its caught way too many std's from dodgy porn 
what should i be looking out for & what should i be avoiding?
got around 500ish but i dont mind payin abit more. i DONT want to build my own though. to much hassle
been looking at some of the packages on dixons website. seem ok plus i get 10% discount at dixons, currys & pc world. any good???

nah seriously, for 500 quid you could get a pukka of a machine, plus you will atleast know what inside the thing
or have a butchers on ebay  Old man got a system about 6 months back, which cost him 300 quid and that was a XP3000 with 80gig drive, 512mb ram, which was a bargin, especially since you couldnt have built it for less that 450 quid

and check out/configure the pc u want and then give em a call they give 3 yrs warranty too from wat i saw last, dirt cheap too and they give u a much better spec than wat dixon or pcworld give

just build one  will save ya abit of cash, plus you will get decent stuff, and too your spec! plus it will take u all of a day to build it, install ya OS (windows 2000...or XP if you want it crash every other minutes  )
although, is it 500 quid for the box, or 500 quid for monitor, mouse, box etc etc?

Don't get an Emachines, they're shite, especially not a Celeron one
If you're getting it from DSG then get a search done, there might be an old laptop or PC sitting upstairs going cheap or something. Then again you'd get a shit spec.
Advent PC's are probbly best to buy from DSG coz they're made for them, so cheaper for higher spec.
Something like that anyway

don't buy anything from pcworld or any other place like tht - there fuckin shite goto a little local computer shop place - get them to custom build you one - Tell em you want a P4 built around an Asus or Abit Motherboard, and DDR Memory rest of it they can come up with - trust me it will run way faster than anything PCWorld, Emachine's, curry's Time or any other shit manufacturer could offer u

Emachines and Advent are SHITE
TRUST ME!
I used to work on these, power supplies are only 150-200W so get quite warm, also had quite a few explode in a shower of sparks cos they can't hack it, uses cheap parts, need I go on??
ebuyer is ok - if your willing to have shite customer service & an average of 75% success rate in delivery & working parts...
Dell aint too shabby, but are a tad expensive for what you get.
Best option is either take the plunge & build your own, or try a reputable local high-street shop who build PC's to the spec you need.

well my option on emachine computers are they are good and mine dont even heat up my tower case is always cold and my computer is on all day and sumtimes even on all nite and i have no problem with mine at all

emachine are shit used to run a pc firm and always used to have them come in for repair and it would always be the power supply fucked up on em! cos theyre small and shit they are rare/ too expensive to get! build ya own or get me to build one for ya

I use an emachines one here at my girlfriends and we've never had any problem with it. Came with 17" flat panel display and Lexmark printer (which yes, is crap). Its not rocket fast and crap for games but its fine with here and eBay so I'm happy.
I usually get Compaq or Dell stuff myself. We use Dell in work and they're not bad at all. Trick with them is to keep an eye out for special offers, double memory, monitor upgrades etc.
