Most Calibra's had 'Red Top' engines with spark plug covers that say Ecotec on them. Though, there are a few which had the Ecotec engines in them. The way to find out is looking at the spark plug cover - the 'Red Top' ones have an 'L' shape one, and the Ecotec's have a flat one.

Spot on the EARLY Cav SRi 16v had XE's (redtops) as well
Any 16v vauxhall before 1994 is a "redtop"
This is donated by having "Vauxhall DOHC 16v" Written on it.
The Early pre cat Redtops are 157bhp
Whist the Cat versions are 150bhp.
The Ectoec is 136 and the engine is coded as C20XEV then the X20XEV.
Vauxhall had to change to the ecotec's to meet new emission laws which were brought out in 1994. hence the demise of the best Vauxhall engine ever.
The C20XE comes with Mahle low compression pistons as standard and they are so so so tuneable much like the early Corsa GSi's C16XE which are also pre ecotec.
The same thing happened in the Corsa the early GSi's got the C16XE (which is not an ecotec) and can be donated by having Vauxhall written on the rocker cover the later ones the X16XE just have ecotec and have the worst thing Vauxhall have ever done "EGR"
JR's list is spot on.

mine:
E plate onwards astra GTE 16v
First ones had coscast heads (more on that later)
Then Cav GSI 2000 and 2000 4wd, up to J plate,
then cav sri from J plate to L plate had 2.0 EX (red top)
From H to M the calibra 16v had a red top,
the later ones, (L onward) have distributorless ingnition packs ( featured on very last cav GSi's as well)
ALL turbo engines up to R reg (calibra) and M reg (Cav turbo's) were NON ECOTEC
even if they say they are.
Now back to coscast heads:
fitted to early astra GTE 16v's E and F plate. Very rare, VIRTUALLY never go pourous unlike
normal c 20 XE ones. Very slightly modded to give early GTE's the magic 156 bhp figure.
stole this from somewhere, so don't ask about the Lotus Nova.

The head was originally casted by Coscoast which are the better heads as they have a lesser habit of going pouress. the later GM items have a bad habit of doing so.
where the rocker cover meets the basic block if its a GM head it will have a stamp on it so check that as well.
Thats right all turbo engines where not ecotec and all carried the C20LET engine code - the later ones Vauxhall just mad look different but still pump out 204bhp with 206lb/ft standard.

That is a C20XE. The best way to get one is to find a 2.0 16v Vauxhall and ask which engine it has in it, as there is some blurryness as to when they stopped using them and started using the Ecotec engines - from what I found, there were cars that were the same reg but had the different engines. This applies to Cavs and Callys only though - Astra GTE's all had C20XE's (Red Top)...

You just look at the sparkplug cover, the above is an Ecotec, should have a black cover with Ecotec on it, but this one has been modded... The one you posted is the C20Xe which is the one to go for...

No worries... Worth asking the questions so you get the 150bhp version, rather than the 136bhp one
