It's a theory, but I doubt anyone really cares enough to scientifically test it...

Cos having a lond engine is soooo cool when you propel yourself from the lights from 0-60 in 15 odd seconds (This is aimed at all these wierd people who have slow cars, that are stupidly noisy)

We've got test equipment that include pressure sensors as part of the kit - might investigate...
If anyone's got an old Corsa B airbox I can butcher, let me know.

On the XE? You'll want to modify the internals of the airbox quite a bit to get the most out of it, the standard airbox basically just acts as a reservoir of stagnant air for the throttle body. Even on full chat, the air is very turbulent and doesn't take the most efficient route.
Getting cold air to the plenum chamber is only part of the problem, getting it filtered and into the engine is where there is the most room for improvement.

Yea, its an idea i'm thinking about. All the induction kits I see are over-pirced pieces of crap. Well, the BMC CDA is probably the best one, but its £180 - thats just a rip off, even though it is high quality...

If the induction kit fails to do what it's claimed it does, then yes, it's an overpriced piece of crap, but if it does what it says on the tin, then it's worth every penny.
People think nothing of spending £400 on cams to get a 15bhp increase, so half of that for about half the bhp gain is money well spent.

Yea, but you see on the packet of the 57i kits that they are supposed to give you a power increase. They are more likely to reduce power. You need hard pipe work and a decent heat shield to get a decent induction kit... Think I might have to make one myself

Tbh, I'd still have an induction kit over the standard airbox, even if it's just for the throttle response.
The X16XE engine is such a dumbfuck when it comes to the air intake anything you can do to help is a benefit.

I would say bollocks
the air coming in from the feed will be traveling at a faster speed to it will fill up the box and then if the engine is not sucking as much air is getting shoved into the box then the air will go out of the box. however when your foot is down you hear the noise of the air getting sucked it no getting forced out. another point to consider would be the fact that you would have a duct to the drilled area anyway so you'd not have any hot air rising into the box. one final point some people put extra ducts into the air box so don;t have any holes for air to escape out from.
