in the majority of cases (depression) antidepressants are extremely useful. true, they aren't a solution in themselves - imagine depression as struggling to reach a book on a high shelf; the drug won't climb up and get it for you, but will give you a step up to get it yourself. the problem is that the majority of gp's have no clue whatsoever about mental illness, so joe bloggs goes to his gp, says 'my girl has dumped me and i'm broke, so feeling a bit down', and the doc hits him with a prescription for prozac - typical medical model, treat the problem, not the cause. point is, joe isn't clinically depressed, he's just having the normal reaction to his current circumstances, so the drug will do a grand total of nothing... except give him some side effects. maybe. personally, i think gp's should refer all cases that they think require pharmaceutical intervention to their local community mental health team, who are better equipped to deal with problem (if there is one). antidepressants are not addictive btw. apologies for the essay too!

ex girlfriend has started her course of these today. i dont feel like im bad enough to need them, but i used to feel like i did.

matt fuck off, no1 chooses to be depressed, life has its ups and downs and can be very hard 4 people. i know this because my x is very depressed about our break up, even though she initiated it all, she regrets it all, plus she has other problems.
