im about to have a valver put in, BUT im having second thoughts i do quitea few mileage to uni and bk every day, and i dont want the car to b off the road. i know a few ppl on here, if the engine does go wrong would help, i.e. beardy (iaz says ur a top bloke) and lee. its going to cost me about 1,500 to get it all done inc brakes! alot of money if the car is just going to b sitting on the side of the road!! other side of things, few 2ltr corsa round my end, have had them running for ages, and few ppl on here have! just pot luck on engine and fitter!!
options welcome, im stuck inbetween two minds!!!

I've had my 2ltr for over 2 yrs now and its never let me down, before you have it fitted replace everything that is common faults on them, that way you wont have to worry

IMO I would never put an XE in with a rebuild. These engines are over 10 years old. I too use my car everyday so it has to be reliable. I believe Lee Mitchells mate shinee does rebuilds at a good price then Lee could fit the engine! Job done

the engine which i am buying has had the bottom end re-built, and basically everything else: this is what its had done:
Engine had done 60k when rebuilt has since done couple of k the most
Thermostat
Timing belt
Head gasket
Rocker gasket
Head bolts
Oil filter
Castol gtx oil
Anti freeze
Rotor arm
Rocker top and cambelt cover
Tension roller
Puller guide
Clutch kit
Strip, clean head, beadblast and grind 8 exhaust valves, 8 inlet valves scrap, cut all seats, lap in all valves, fly cut 006 off head face, wash and assemble,
also has power boost valve and power cap and induction kit
had a go in it, and started first time and drove ok! i just want it to last 1-2 years, til i get a new car!!
i will have these things done when the engine is out:
new:
gasket
cambelt
water pump
and a service i.e. oil etc
anything else i should change!!

u should have no more problems with a 2 litre in ur car than a 1.4. but being an old engine things do go wrong. ie; air flow meters, water temperature sensor, alternator etc. but these can go on any engine.

Things like airflow meter, sensors, etc can all be picked up on eBay for pence - it's just the hassle when you're trying to work out what the problem is.
Andy, have you sorted insurance then? I think you should still go for a tuned 1.6 ...

i would say they are damn bullet proof, my old 14 16v used to break every week or so, had my valver two years before it went wrong and that was mostly my fault
they are pretty reliable and as lee said little things can go wrong like AFM's etc but that happens with any engine. There may be a fe teething problems at the beginign but you get that with any conversion.
used to drive mine to uni in london then to southend then to home almost every day racking up about 115 miles a day every day and it never skipped a beat. On a recent RWYB day we ran my car 30 times plus up the strip and it never broke and i used to give mine stick from the moment go every day
well reliable and bullet proof and at 60K miles thats just running in

No-ones mentioned it as an alternative, so i will...
There is always the option of the newer, but lower powered C20XEV, or the ECOtec 2.0 16v. Drops around 20 brake on the older XE, but then you can got them brand new upto a few years ago, so less likely in theory to break. If your only planing on light mods to it (filter, exhaust, cams, chip etc), your ok, but if you want big power, its more economically feasible to go for the XE .

yeah i did think about this one rob, but loads of ppl have advised me to go for the xe, if im doing an engine conversion, might as well use the xe to get more BHP as standard!

the xe is a much more fun engine to drive than the xev!
Andy just get the bloody thing and enjoy it and stop worrying about it!
If it goes poo then take out and fix simple as that! The joys of owning a faster modified car!

ive had loads of problems with mine, but have done since day one really. Make sure you get everything serviced while the engine is out, as you already know, and it should be okay.
