I am thinking of purchasing an MP3 player so I can listen to some tunes when commuting to/from work, and at work when it's quiet.

Should I buy one of those iPod things, or are there decent (cheaper) alternatives? Don't want something crap but then again don't want to pay a fortune either.

I don't have much in the way of MP3s (only about 2Gb) by the way.

Rio Karma is good, £229 for 20gb, nice little design too.

There's also a Rio Carbon which is £179ish i think which is 5gb, looks rather nice too.

Other than that, there's a few cheaper alternatives Samsung, which i had and broke, so aint recommending.

Or you could get a mini ipod for £180 4gb too, saves £40 on price of a 20gb iPod.

(That's just stuff at Dixons, btw.. just got back from work )

Can only got 650meg (or whatever ur CD's are) 11/12 Albums or so.

They ain't too bad, but are still susceptable to shocks and skipping tracks. MP3 players shouldn't do that as there's no moving parts.

I got a "manly pink" mini iPod, kicks ass

I don't really want anything fancy, just something that's cheap and does the job, as I'm only gonna be using it while I'm commuting or at work.

Plus I think iPods are easily distinguishable by the white headphones = people interested in thieving it...

I had a Philips HDD 15gb thingy, looked the bollocks but was pretty shit to use. Get an iPod Mini. Ideal for commuting because its tiny and ideal for the amount of music you have. They're 4gb.

But that would involve putting all ya music onto CD first.

Also, that would be damn inconvenient to carry round.

I just can't really justify spending nearly £200 on something to play MP3s while I'm travelling to and from work!

Hmmm...

I already have a phone that can play MP3s (Nokia 6230) but I only have 32Mb to play with (unless I upgraded the memory card I guess)...

The 6230 would take an extra memory card from what i think, so you could use that, a decent memory card would cost £50 or so anyway tho, so may as well go for the CD player. Like i say the Anti-shock aint too good on them.

http://www.phonememorycards.co.uk/nokia-6230-memory-cards

These guys sell various memory cards for my phone. Dunno what to do really, it would be handy listening to them on my phone but there's also battery life of the phone to take into consideration (ie. I'd have to recharge every night as opposed to every 3/4 nights like I do at the moment)...

The mp3 players with 4 gig and 20 gig do have moving parts. Most of the >1 gig players have moving parts.

Yes I know. Cavey didn't seem to though when he was talking about the 4 and 20 gig ones which will definitely have hard drives inside them.

That reason, battery life mainly. not heard anything played from a 6230, but can't imagine the Sound quality being anything special either really
