ok, i think it has more chance to be a dodgy earth since ive recently had a new engine put in...the battery looks about 8 years old....lol it has a tendancy if i leave my cd player on for longer than 4.5mins without the engine it goes flat...ill try those ideas...cheers

does it matter where about on the gearbox it is?

If the CD player for 4 minutes drains it, what would an engine do to it? Try another battery, or at least try jumping from another car. If it clicks, the starter is trying to turn but can't.

This was discussed the other day.

The battery may be showing up as fully charged and has a good voltage, but its actually fucked, specially if its 8 years old. If they go flat they dont have a chance of starting a car after going flat so many times.

It could, but I'd check the battery first.

nooo... what if it turns out your battery is ok? you will have just wasted 40-50 quid on a battery.

ok, will earthing the gearbox to the battery with a jump lead actually do anything? and where abouts is the starter motor situated in the engine bay? i take it, it touches the gearbox if your saying to earth it? cheers

getting the inlet manifold off is no 10 min job.
you can see it if you get your head down next the engine above the gearbox around the header tank area and look at the back of the block.

crap pic but here:
it's the black cylinder behind the two pipes directly above my hand. you can just make it out.

probably be easier to access from underneath if you jack the n/s front up nice and high.
