keep us updating mate although there must be a catch somewhere, because surely they would loose too much money - unless 'pipe' prices have come down recently

this is the joys of being able to install your own equiptment and charge what you like , hence £39.99 for 8Mb
there will be some catch some where or something but still its a sign of things to come

well it wont be long until something floats around on the net about this although theres gotta be a serious catch because ukonline would loose around 48k a year...not very good business sense, but hey sounds good
Although 3.2 megs a sec is a nice little download
paul_j - its 1Gbit connection, so its a 128megabyte connection

The catch is most servers don't go that fast. I doubt you'd see a difference most of the time.

this is true....anything over around 800k/sec (8Mb connection) is pretty much useless becase of what your said ian.
However, hopefully with faster net connections backbones/pipes will also increase in speed

Doesn't matter, we'd need to cap the server to make sure usage didn't go astronomical, more so that we do now, ie. 20ks or something to make sure people didn't just come in and wget the entire carimages folder. I can see a lot of hosts going down that route.

this is where Fibre optic comes in to play, LES circuts run upto 100Mb its all depends on the routers etc.. but this will push the manufactures to make them.

oh yea, fibre is where it is at...but no one is willing to put in the serious amount of cash to get the old copper replaced
but i think we are a good few years away before anything like that happens - isps are gonna get as much out of copper lines as they can, because of the whole cost of fibre etc

well its more suited to analogue stuff yea, but they did use copper on the old networks - back in the day of end terminals etc etc
but like i said mate, its all down to money and BT are never gonna take it up because their in debt and no other ISP is going to do it because they cant afford to etc etc.
Only thing that could happen is if the government poured in a load of cash into broadband and isps did the same and share the fibre network etc etc
tbh, the closest people to getting a fibre network is NTL/Telewest (the cable companies)...and as it wont be long til they merge, i feel they will have the upper hand soon.

Easynet operates one of the most powerful, high capacity networks in the UK. With a national footprint of 4,450km, Easynet’s fibre optic network runs through 50 major cities, with four metro rings in London, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Their network also has access to more than 36 points of presence and 27 co-location premises, where our customers can house access, server or hosting equipment. Easynet has pioneered the extension of tried and trusted Broadband technology and used the opportunity of local loop unbundling. Local loop unbundling means that on its own loops, Easynet has much greater control over the quality of service and is able to offer enhanced Service Level Guarantees and contention ratios right down to 1:1 (no contention ratios). Easynet’s 4Mbps and 8Mbps HSDSL services offer the fastest download speeds available on Broadband DSL products in the UK. They use SDH, DWDM and MPLS technology, which allows us to set prioritisation for your traffic across their network
