Boy racers could have their cars seized by police in a new city centre crackdown.

Police say there is an increasing danger of pedestrians being knocked over, especially following the relocation of the city's bus station into the city centre.

Temporary bus stops now lie in the centre of a circuit favoured by many racers.

Now, Humberside Police are worried that drunken party-goers could wander into the path of the racers, who speed through the built-up area in their high-powered cars.

Police have now launched Operation Burma to tackle the racers, particularly members of Hull Cruise, a club which meets in city centre locations for drives.

PC Andy Walker, from Queen's Gardens, will patrol the city centre in an unmarked car, which is also equipped with a speed detector and video equipment to catch the racers on film.

He will be monitoring hot spots including Pryme Street, Anne Street, and Albion Street.

Officers are encouraged to use their powers under the Police Reform Act 2002, which lets them seize cars where drivers are considered dangerous.

PC Walker said: "Hull Cruise are a problem. They tear about outside the temporary bus station in Albion Street where people are waiting to catch buses.

"We have the power to warn these people and if they fail to heed our warning, we will take their cars off them."

It will cost £105 for drivers to claim their cars back.

PC Walker said: "They race on circuits. Sometimes the cars are poorly maintained and as they tear around corners, they can easily lose control. That is a recipe for disaster.

"The drivers are putting themselves and others in danger, particularly intoxicated pedestrians.

"We want to deter people who unacceptably use the city centre roads.

"This is anti-social behaviour and careless and reckless driving, and it won't be tolerated."

exactally....it was gunna happen one day anyway...dnt go to hull anyway so not really effecting me much...only go now and again cus its quite crap

yeah heard there is a bit of trouble in hull with people hanging around the colllege carpark and prime street, like kate though im not in hull a lot, i prefer scarborough to be honest. i dont fink beverley is to bad either, plenty of quite nice cars about.

get bored of scarboro tho cus everyone drives up n down n gets kinda boring after a while...then again hardly take my car out cus cant be bothered to drive wen all this grit is about

well if you see half of them people posting on hull cruise, you sometimes wonder if they have had a english lesson, there spelling is just dreadfull lol.

kates car is a sri with gsi skirts and spoiler, meshed grill, 15'' tsw's, sebring exhaust i belive matt.
