Finally got round to getting my car diagnostic checked as it hasn't been running properly for well over a year and been progressively getting worse.

They found I needed a new cat, new air flow meter and some other expensive sensor (which I can't even remember what it was)...

All together including labour is gonna cost me about £600

Then straight after getting it fixed, I need to take my car down the bodyshop to get the boot repaired after some pikeys broke into it and I'm looking at about 160 ish for that (needs new lock too).

and I had to pay for a new passenger window because they also smashed that

a lot of money

and what I really want to do is sell and buy a 106 gti! - But how likely is it now? after all this shit

U could just get the cosmetics repaired and then sell the car with the engine problems (if they're not too bad) and let the new owner sort it

You could get a whole X16XE engine conversion from Lee for £350 then you just need to supply the engine.

So another £300, so £650

They were bad... on the test drive they would of noticed

It kept spluttering, and cutting out at about 1.5k rpm - so many times I would be on a roundabout and go to pull out and it'd just stop accelerating and pop a few times I'd have my foot flat and all of a sudden it'd kick in rescuing me from potential death

Also in the past I've had 117 mph on the clocks (which is probably only about 106) - but lately it's struggled to get over 100!

Even when I got my dyno run of 81 bhp the guy told me my car wasn't running correctly (and that was back in the days of it feeling like it was just starting to go down hill)...

makes more sense to get a smooth boot than pay £160+ to have it repaired

anyway - the cost for the boot isn't my worry... for the damage it's a good price.

Just a lot for the engine. Though if you do the maths you can see why.

Buy the bits and do all the work yourself.........or is that what the £600 is?

I thought about this too but the problems he describes cant of happened due to ragging it surely?

Perhaps

Or it could be the fact that people say the induction kits really fuck up the AFM's on 1.2 16v's (millions of posts in Help Zone that show the problems people have) - then a faulty afm and this other oxygen sensor would be pumping the wrong amount of fuel into my car... thus overfueling it.

The overfuel in my exhaust helped clog up / destroy my cat over time...

I don't rag it when I'm not racing Rx7's lol...

I'm a poor student I can't afford much petrol, so it's usually being driven about 1.5k-2k rpm in 4th or 5th all the time - i.e. going to the shops, or to and from uni.

Don't drive in 5th at like 10 mph though lol - then you'll be burning too much fuel.

I think the most efficent rpm is 2k or something...

Below 2k coz of the strain of 5th gear you have to pump in a lot of fuel to get it to move

How much for the parts alone, i cant stand the word "labour" , anything one of those grease monkeys can do, you could probably do yaself. if you need a hand just call.

Paul its looking bad isnt it. Got exactly the same problems as you.

HOWEVER, if you unplug your O2 sensor, then the ECU uses a preset program, and emulates the readings from the other sensors.

This is what ive been doing of recent and the car doesnt hesitate at all. Your emissions will rise a bit, but just plug it back in if you have an MOT coming up.

I stripped mine down today. Cleaned the AFM, checked all grounds (soo many people think because its intermittent, it screams a wiring fault), checked throttle position sensor, fitted new o2 sensor, checked cam and crank sensors, icv is working fine, still no closer to getting it sorted.

Your theory about the cams wearing down could well be correct though, it was a known problem on vectra's. After time the camshaft postition sensor was too far away from the cam sensors to pick up a steady signal. The way they got around it was to expand the mounting hole for the sensor so it sat closer to the lobes on the cam. Im gonna give this a shot at some point soon.

Trust me, if you dont want to whack the cash out at the moment, just unplug your O2 sensor. If your engine management light isnt on, its more than likely vaux are just hinting guesses at the problem.

When i had my car tested for emissions, it clearly showed that the car was overfuelling. Why would a cat cause this? All other readings were top notch which meaned the cat was fine.

They always point at the air flow meter too, but trust me you defo know when they have gone wrong, just unplug the bastard and ull see

If the other sensor was a throttle position sensor or cam sensor, then its all gone pete tong

Im still trying to find a solution, and will never stop
