(5) / (x-1/x) = 3

Question 2

(2) / (x) + (3) / (x-1) = 4

As seen below.

If anyone can solve the following showing the soloution that would be good.

i didn't work it out, i just looked at it and know it, i'm good at maths and thats an easy one

2/x has to be 3 or below, same for the other bit of it

for no.2 can you multiply by x + (x -1) ?

that would give 5 = 8x - 4

x = 9/8

I am probably wrong, got an D on A level maths

for 1) 5/x - (1/x)=3
5= 3(x - (1/x))
5= 3x - (3/x)
5= x(3 - (1/x)
x= 5/ (3-0.3) when i say 0.3 i mean a third.find the answer from there

for 2) 2/x + 3/(x-1) = 3
(2(x-1) + 3x) / (x(x-1) = 4
(5x-2) / (x^2-x) = 4
5x-2= 4(x^2-x)
5x-2= 4x^2-4x
4x^2-9x+2 = 0

from there you can find x by solving the quadratic. btw 4x^2 means 4x squared.hope this helps

Can you not even solve the quadratic?

(4x - 1)(x - 2)

Giving roots (i.e. answers that x is) of 0.25 and 2...

And the reason jow multiplied by (x-1)/(x-1) on the first fraction and x/x on the second is because that is the same as multiplying by 1 -- it doesn't change the formula, but it meant you had the same denominator on both sides, making it possible to rearrange easily...
