Exactly - the Astra was simply best in its class.

As Autocar said........

"The Astra GTE 16v now has the engine to make this a true hot hatch - it will literally blow the doors of anything else in its class"

Nuff said.

Sure is - classed as the best of its time.

The 20xe is such a good engine was compaired to the likes of the EcoSHECK.

The Ford boys even regard this as gold.

'The Astra GTE 16v quite simply blows the doors of any other normally aspirated hot hatch. Its fine, powerful engine is its heart and soul. Its no slouch on the twisty bits either. Good grip, powerful brakes and a competant chassis put it light years ahead of both the Golf GTi 16v and the 309 GTi...'AUTOCAR, 04/05/88

not too sure about the way they rave on about the handling, mine gives me a feeling of just about pulling you through

adds to the fun though...

Doesnt the 20xe stem from the pinto engine tho?

no, XE was built by the germans, and bears very little resemblance to a Pinto...

unless there is something which I am un-aware of....?

The XE was the brainchild of Vauxhall and Opel. Both the UK and Europe bulit them.

The reason why the XE and old LET's of this world are no more.........

Is because in essence all the components where top spec - foged psitons etc as standard... Most actually hand bulit.

Then 1994 the new euro 4 emission laws come into play and these engines no longer complied and were costing vauxhall so so much to make.
