Right, just had a call from the MOT place telling me that my car has failed on emissions. I can understand them being high compared to a standard car 1.4 corsa (it was originally a 1.4, now a 2.0)

Does the emissions go on my car or my engine? The engine in my car is pre cat. The car is a 93 so it should technically have one. Can anyone help me out on this?

It failed on afew other bits & pieces as well.

O/S bottom ball joint - £9.40 for the part, easy to fit
Apparently it needs some welding doing but I haven't seen it yet so I don't know how bad it is
Hazzard switch - Sticks abit, shouldn't be too hard to fix

The only other worrying thing it failed on is the brake compensator. £217 for a new one through a local parts company, gonna ring local vaux dealer later see if I have any joy. Hopefully Steve Smith can help me out a little

Also, does anyone know of anywhere in Yorkshire that could tune my car? It has Omex engine management system. Tried Cossvaux but they wanted a ridiculas amount....

Cheers

emissions go on the engine, if the engine is 91 spec then you will need 91 spec emissions if it is a 93 spec then you will ned 93 spec emissions

Its which is older out of the car or the engine. Just tell them the engine is from a 1989 MK2 GTE so is pre cat. Also the fact there is a CO adjuster on the AFM and no lambda sensor makes that very plain to the tester.

Its in the MOT manual, that the engine test is based on the engine.

A little bit confusing to say the least!!!

Does anyone have any solid proof that the test needs to be done on the engine age as it is older than the car? I really really need your help here guys

Had a quick look & that doesn't seem to mention anything about it. Had to be quick at looking though as my boss doesn't like me spending all my day on here

I never had this trouble with mine and the engine in my car is 10 years newer than the car and requires a CAT, BUT as it goes by the age of the car it passes.

They are dicks and need to learn the MOT code of practice.

I can direct you toward this thread.

http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=175861&highlight=MOt+emissions

Ben Lee and Peachperf are both MOT testers so they should know. It even tells you which bit to look in for on the MOT hand book. 7.3 exhaust emissions. when you go down ask to see the book, and point it out to them.
Once you have your MOT report them to the VOSA for being knobs.

Vehicles fitted with a different engine
Test according to which is older , engine or vehicle.

eg. A 1995 car fitted with a 1991 engine (of whatever make), test to 1991 standards for emission purposes.

Note: The onus is on the vehicle presenter to prove engine age.

YES!!!

All I need to do now is work out where my engine number is & how old it is

engine number is on the right hand side of th eblock right where th egearbox mates to the block, just next to the base of the dipstick bit.
Just write out and receipt for engine from a 1989 MK2 astra GTE make up name and address and signiture, spill tea on and add dirty hand print and stick in the cars file

Yep

I can appreciate that testing a car with a differant engine might not be an everyday occurance but it really pissed me off how he instatly said it was bollocks & didn't even check up on it.

that tester is an arse dont even need a cat on a 93 car anyway never mind the engine ..
when you come to test emissions on a car you do a basic cat test which yours would obviously fail the computer then makes you do a bigger test where you select make, model , engine but a 2.0xe wont be in the list so it goes to a default test where you get 3.50% like an 89 car if that dont make any sense to you dont worry im an mot tester too my car is an s reg with an xe in
