Coming from my GSi. The brakes are shit as well so im thinking it could be related?
But the guy i bought it off today had it MOT'd today so im a bit concerned how it passed an MOT with shit brakes
Any thoughts?

Could either the brakes or clutch cause the engine management light to come on?

The brake light would come on if it was low on fluid. The clutch... simple test floor it and if it doesnt go anywhere and rev then its slipping.

right, had it checked out, the calipers and drums have been painted and apparently this could be why it smells of burning.
does that sound right?

i painted my calipers on the car and then drove it up the road and it didnt smell of burning
