You can just use a wireless card in each laptop. If the laptops are fairly new, they should have either built-in wireless and/or ethernet (wired) anyway.

Bluetooth and infra-red would be far to slow for playing multiplayer games. Best option is 2 network cards and a crossover cable. Also this would be the quickest option to.

Buy a decent 10/100Mbps switch, I recently picked up an 8-port version for under £20.

So, you can plug 8 machines into it, networked together, for somewhat bigger gaming sessions!

ok. that toshiba P4010 has a network port already so you have saved some money there. If your mate has one in his laptop then all you will need is a crossover cable. You can buy these from pc world, if you want to.

Here is a link to the crossover cable you will need. I bought one from pc world and it cost me £9.99, so I dont know why it is £17 now.

crossover cable

You can buy these from most computer shops cheaper, and some will even make the cable up for you if you need a longer length.

No probs. They should detect that a cable is plugged in to the port (should say "status: connected 100mbps"), if you connect both ends to machines. but it will not show other pc. What you will need to do is make sure they are both in the same workgroup. If you are running windows 2000 or Xp, right click on my computer and go to systems properties. Then look at the workgroup name. They should both be set the same. Common one is "MSHOME". If they are both set to this you should be able to see each others pc in my network places.
