As above, the motor is pinking.

What could be the cause, is timing the only one?

Cheers

how do you know its pinking? its rare for this to happen as the knock sensor would pick it up and the ecu will adjust timing accordingly until the pinking stops. what are the symptoms?

have been searching around the forum and previous posts have suggested it is.

when the engine's struggling, it makes a rattley noise like a 'bag of nails'. especially up hills...

yeah sometimes it feels like it's not firing on all cylinders (if that's the right way to put it)

no mods, completely standard.

just had new timing chain, tensioner etc fitted (it pinked before that though)

just had a check, the 1.0 12v comes with a knock sensor system that compromises of a senso in the back of the block and a pre-set value in the ecu. if the sensor detects a knock (pre igniting) it will adjust the timing of the spark/ injector in that cylinder accordingly. if there is a problem wit the engine pinking and no engine management light on, its likely to be a problem with the fuel/ air system. either a faultu or leaking throttle body/ vaccum hose, faulty distributor, exessive carbon build up, or an injection system fault ( not as likely as this would probably show a fault code, unless its a physical blockage).

the air mass meter could be causing problems, my girlfriends car does the same thing when you put you foot to the floor (1.2 16v) but not sure about the pinking, as the ecu takes a reading from the air mass meter, and will adjust timing using signals from the knock sensor.

i take it youre not getting any management light on?

to be honest, a garage wont be able to test it properly, id go to a rolling road as they can test all the sensors when the car is under load and with the car plugged in to test equptment.

your local little garage wont be able to do much apart from open the bonnet and guess.

one other thing to check is the leads. did they get changed with the service?

ok would have to go south for a rolling road though.

not sure if he did or not, didn't write it on the invoice. might be a stupid question be can you get 'performance' leads?

i had this aswell i thought the top or bottom end had gone and car was fcuked or somin. it was just the air flow meter. it was really weird that a meter can cause the noise.
