it only cuts out if engine managment light is on, its fine if the light isnt on which is making me think dodgy sensor somewhere. much is a air flow meter?

Might be able to get hold of one for you though I'll let you know!

phoned a Mate who knows someone with a Scrapyard going to have a look and see if he can find a working one test it in his car then pass it on to me if it works if it does we'll just swap them over and give him the dud one back

Its the speed sensor which is causing the problem

Get a new speedo cable thats all it is.

Its the speedo cable thats broken and causing your speed sensor to cut the engine out.

Honestly first thing to check is the speedo cable I guarantee its snapped.

I only know this because my Nova's speedo cable has snapped as well and it does exactly the same thing.

If the Speedo is erratic on idle but still registering the Speed correctly but it's cuttin out on approach to Junctions could the cable be at fault once again??

the ecu requires a speed signal from the vehicle speed sensor in the back of the clocks. the ecu uses the vss when engine is coasting to determine the correct position of the idle control valve. the vss sends a pulse signal to the ecu, depending on how fast ypu are going, i.e faster = more pulses per second. the vss is driven directly by the speedo mechanism, so any fluctuations in the reading can cause a faulty pulse signal to be sent to the ecu, so if the ecu has no signal or a faulty signal, it wont idle correctly.

that sounds spot on m8, so what is disturbing the signal then> snapped cable ? dodgy speed sensor? or the actual clock?

what will solve the problem?

probably a cable. only £27 from vaux. if not that then try getting a new speedo drive for the gearbox. probably the cable tho. if it was a fault with the vss itself, it would register a permanent fault code, so its unlikely to be that.
