Just had the car in for its MOT. Guy phones up to say that it failed on 3 minor things but he could sort it. Fine I said - what did it fail on?

Nearside Bearing was loose - Fair Enough
One of the headlights was loose - Fair Enough

And my fckuing Magic Tree which i hang from my rear view mirror was obscurring my view - FAIL

I'm just glad he didn't charge me labour to take it off

I agree but it is the law. I remember a thing in the news about a guys car failing his MOT for having a Comic Releif red nose hanging from his.

sad as most things are on the mot but as testers were not allowed to remove them during a test.

'Tis true mate, anything at all hanging from rear view mirror is deemed hazardous as it obscures your vision like a cracked screen would and is classed as an MOT failure. I don't think the tester is allowed to remove the item either, so in your absence can actually fail the car until you remove it.

The same goes for checking the spare tyre in a full boot - the tester is not allowed to remove the contents of the boot.

Along with only needing one fog light and reverse lights not needing to work even if factory fitted, MOT law is indeed a curious thing

u cant fail it for something hanging from the rear view mirror there is no where in the manual that says this like there is no where in the manual that says u can fail for an insecure batterie some testers make up there own rules spare wheels dont come into the test and reverse lights dont come into the test

I thought that if you had a spare wheel then it needed to be securely stoed and have the legal ammount of tread on it.

Does it need counseling, and is it French?

Just repeating what i've been told by both the testers where I work and every tester i've ever asked the question to.

'Any obstruction of forward vision, this includes anything hung from a rear view mirror is hazardous and technically a fail, whether the tester wishes to be pedantic and adhere to the law, or turn a blind eye would appear to be down to personal discretion, but if he so wishes, he can fail a vehicle for visual obstructions.

As I said, reverse lights are not specified to be tested even if they are factory fitted - quite bizzare.

I mentioned the spare; in as far as if the car has a good spare and will fail on a tyre, if the boot is filled with personal effects preventing the tester from easily accessing the spare to fit it in place of the worn tyre, he can refuse to do so and fail the car until the customer has emptied their boot and cleared access to the good tyre.

Once again, I am just reiterating points of interest that have been made to me by testers over time in conversation, usually while working.

I am not however having a dig, and simply wanted to clarify my earlier statement.
Cheers.
