there is a review in my monthly car mag Motor, with these 3 cars up against each other. At the moment, the 182 and GTi180 reign supreme in the hot hatch sector. The Clio is most favoured out of the two though. Was a good article, with both merits awarded to performance and design.
Out of the three, the GTi180 lacked off the pace of the other two, but not by much at all. The Clio was fastest from a standing start to 100kmh, and also fastest on the 1/4 mile, just shadowing the GTi. However, the GTi was favoured as the best hot hatch out of the 3, simply because of its superior build quality, gutsy torquey engine, and amazing gearbox. They say in the review that the gearbox is one of the best this year, and that includes supercars like Porsche.
It is interesting to note that on a rolling start, the GTi is quicker than the 182 to 100 km/h, and manages to maintain ahead on the 1/4mile. probably down to the buckets of torque available in mid range. it will get beaten off the lights though by the Clio.
When it comes to handling, the Clio is still dominant and extremely well composed at all speeds. The GTi faired very well too, although suffered a fraction from too much squirm thanks to its 1340kg weight. Thats 300kg more than the Clio, and 200 more than the GTi.
I must add though, the GTi interior is lovely, bar the tartan trim seats. Dials are really funky, and speedo goes up to 300kmh Its also $5000 more than the Clio though.

0-100kmh
Clio - 7.23secs
GTi - 7.76secs
GTi180 - 7.93secs

0-400m
Clio - 15.36@149.4kmh
GTi - 15.62@149.3kmh
GTi180 - 16.02@145.9kmh

That’s quite surprising I would of thought the Golf GTi would have been far more superior to the other 2

according to the 0-60 the golf gti does it in 6.7 seconds so thats already quicker also as stu says the braking in the vw is going to be alot better and the golf gti has a higher top speed of 145 mph. But the car is more expensive to buy.

Thats the problem all stats are different, which stats are the correct ones?, is it down to the driver? Weather conditions.

I'm glad I went for the 172 as I get the same sort of performance for the total price of £6k

How much are the Golf GTi's new?
