yea probably
I would drain some out rather than let it burn, although I have let it burn off in the past its not reccomended as it may cause wear on seals etc.

Hopefully just over full. get it out ASAP cos if your oil pressure gets too high you'll blow a gasket.
Just drain a bit off from the sump plug, will be a little messy but you'll be able to do it without draining the lot!

Don't mean to highjack your thread but my car is doing the same(1.4 16V).I had an oil change and the dip stick was showing that the oil was on max level. But few days later it is showing way over max,the plastic bit on the dip stick is covered with oil? What does this mean?I still don't understand cause i've putted the right amount of oil when i was doing the oil change. The oil is Motul 8100 full synthetic.

then you can get a combination of the two, with oil burning with water evaporating with a major gasket failure

I am the expert about blue smoke
I overfilled mine when i first got it and had the same problem, jack your car up get a container, undo sump plug it will piss out best to empty a fair bit whack plug back in.
Check level fill up to proper limit. as mentioned above wait untill oil has settled/sunk into all places.
Then drive with no blue smoke.
OR
Buy a turbo and have blue smoke all the time

Oil fill procedure should really be:
1) Remove sump plug and drain
2) Remove oil filter
3) Fill new oil filter with oil and refit
4) Put sump plug back in
5) Fill oil til half full on dipstick
6) Warm car up to working temp
7) Turn off and leave to settle for 5 mins
8) Recheck oil and fill as necessary!

Stu - I'd add removing the oil cap on the engine when draining and also the use of cloths
