hey. just a quick question... if the rms of your sub and mono amp are the same, what should the gain, bass, treble etc levels be set at ??

It depends on the sub/amp/headunit/sub box/position of subs.
Take it to your local ice dealer and pay £10 to have it set up, it will sound 100 times better

jl audio 12w3 d4 (300rms) sub and alpine digital monoblock amp (300rms), theres only k&m acoutics round here and they are supposed to be a rip off.

find the maximum undistorted bass level and work from there to get the sort of bass you want

you'll get more bass into the car but you won't 'feel' it as much

but how do you sort out gain levels if the subs new, coz you shouldnt cain the fook out of it when you've only just got it surely

i thought you set the gain to its correct level,
thne start playing it at volume 1 on the HU the slowly increase maybe 1 every 2 or 3 hours...?
is this not the case?
Otherwise, as you start increasing gain, how do u know when to stop?

think you increase the gain until the bass sounds good without any distortion, once it distorts youve gone too far.

well after AGES of waiting, my RE sub arrives this week 
obviously i wana run thething in and getting booming away PDQ, but i dont wana bugger it up.
SO the vibe is, start at 0, then build up to just about 1/2 way...?

set the gain level according the output coltage of your head unit. The gain isnt a volume control. After setting the gain play at low level (volume) and increase gradually over about 20hrs, to run in properly

yes i am aware the gain is more of a potentiometer to match the out put voltage levels on the HU to the amplifier.
However what i wondered, was how do you know WHEN to stop increasing the gain, because i do not want to over cook ANYTHINg, not even for a few hours.

amp arrived today, yeh it has got a built in crossover function, between 50-200 hz, wat shud it be set at for running a sub only ???

its not as simle as setting the gain, there are LPF and HPF to worry about, only a professional or some1 with lots of experience can set up a system correctly.

obviously i want to get the most out of my system, without slowy cooking the voice coil.

12" sub jake.
sub came today, was supposed to be a dual 4 ohm jl audio 12" 300 rms sub, but instead ive got a dual 2 ohm.
my amp gives out 300 rms at 2 ohm, and about 200 at 4 ohm.
can i wire it up so that the sub still gets 300 rms from the amp ??
presume i wire it up to one side of the sub (one voice coil)

ok mike, dual 2 ohm means instead of having a single 4 ohm voice coil it has two 2 ohm coils.
1. with single 4 ohm coil you can only run it at 4 ohms = 200W
2. with dual 2 ohm will have to wire the two coils in series to 4ohm, unless you have an amp that is stable at 1ohm, then u would wire them in parallel to give 1ohm
