Right, I'm gutted. Sold the Evo last night I'm seriously thinking of buying an M3 - Cheaper to run etc etc. Fancy a Black one with Red Nappa and all the toys. Does anyone have first hand experience of these? i.e parents have one, you've had one/driven one etc? Not really many other cars I want at this moment in time (needs to be reasonably quick, not too heavy on the wallet to run etc)
Any comments would be

Heard petrol's pretty bad, a mate of a mates got one but not sure in comparrison to your evo :bogglE: heard they are very solid and alot more car than the e36, should imagine you'll be paying a shed load for servicing though

I was getting on average 16mpg in the Evo, IIRC the M3 is around low to mid 20s? It's the servicing that'll really save the dosh though, every 12k miles in the BM compaired to every 4500 in the Evo. Servicing isn't too bad from local BM dealer, same as an Evo service but as above much less frequent I don't like the E36, looks far too dated and a bit crappy now. New one looks much better built etc

Yeah agreed on the new one being and looking more solid. If you're driving it sensible you'll be ok but if you're hammering it you're gonna hit less than 16mpg remember it's a 3.2 343bhp car that's probably alot heavier than the evo.

Yeah but if you hammer the evo your probably touching low single figure mpg! Not really bothered about petrol, its the servicing and general wear and tear that annoys me. I think they look like a good buy, done most of the bad depreciation so it looks a safe bet for 24 months to me?

How old etc are you looking at? I'd say now's a good time to buy yeah been out a good couple of years, they don't start at less than £20k still though do they?!

Start at around 21, looking at an 02-03 plate really, mileage around 35-40k. I think for the money they look a good buy, can't think of any real rivals in the marque?

I had an E36 M3 Evo and hated it, apparently the E46 and the E30 are very different beasts!

Yeah the 36's are a bit naff, not impressed with their 'pace' either. I'd say the original and new one are better - would love an E30 but the gf will murder me

i drive them nearly everyday.techs at work tell me the things to look out for are rattling engines.costs about 500 notes to have them re shimmed.they start to get worn at about 40 - 50k.front discs and pads are £1000 fitted at bmw.apart from that there good cars quite quick and sound ace when the flap in the exhaust opens up.forgot to mention they need regular services as the oil is like piss.service aint cheap either

i know someone who had one, 19's tv etc. very fast and refined car. in acceleration it couldnt keep up with a mates p1 but get the 155mph limiter removed and top end on these things become's scary
however if i had £20k and was looking at a bmw it would have to be an e39 m5. 400bhp 5.0 v8

yes it is alot more car for the money, the m3 looks a bit nicer but when you read quotes like this 400 HP. 500 Nm. The facts says it all. The BMW M5 is the most powerful sedan in the world. And the fastest. It is the most powerful BMW ever built. Also the fastest accelerating production model BMW ever built and see pics like this :
i find it hard not to fall in love
