been thinking once/if  i ever get my car finished i would really like to build a race or rally car from scratch.
I have another project lined up  but would like a race car to build and race eventually.
im talking full stripped seam welded shell, roll cage coilovers, BIG brakes, small fuel tank in rear, custom dash panel etc etc.
what is a good car to start with and what things should i be thinking about with regards to building it.
any pics would be great

nned to decide what type of racing you want to do before building acar, no point building something with no series to race in
look on 750motor clubs website for formulars to race in and rules and regs

106 rallye would be my choice.
Gti lump, wild cams & head work, decent ECU, motorsport exhaust system, big brakes, suspension mods including uprated torsion bars/anti roll bars. Thats a good start

My sisters BF is building a MK2 escort with a C20XE in it, not for racing though just for a bit of fun, looking forward to seeing it finished.
Read his performance Ford magazine sometimes and all the bits are all very easily available as its all been done loads of times

would either like to try rally driving or touring car stylee racing, not really sure what kind of car series is best for a novice?

i race single seaters my self and see alot of cars built by there owners. any car is good its just the way its built that makes the difference. most race winning cars are fully rose jointed for adjustment purposes and to make it strong.b ut there is more or less a class for every type of car and or engine size

Is started a similiar post a few months back, since I have decided to go on a rally course after christmas, give me a taster. Just the money factor involved with racing

was thinking a later escort, mk3 astra fiesta, corsa
anything that i would be able to pick up a clean straight shell for not to much $$$

106 rallye shell is very rigid btw.
also if you mate a gti lump to a the s1 gearbox you have the uber short gear ratios as well.

im under the impression currently best thing to do is a build a beast as a second car and just have some fun on track days

like jr says, depends where you want to race it, if its just for fun mainly, then get a 205 or something similar
although, a mk3 escort would be a good starting point for a track car, or an XR2 or something

To be honest, if you want to compete in any type of motorsport, forget the words cheap and budget. If you want to build and race properly, money is a key factor and you WILL spend a scary amount.
The first thing you HAVE to do is join a motor club. You have to be a member to compete. Check out the MSA website for a list of clubs near you. Go along to meetings and talk to the club members, as they will already have done whatever you want to do a hundred times and their experience will save you invaluble ammounts of time and money.
As JR said, you need to decide what motorsport you want to compete in. There are hundreds to choose from, so go along to events and get a feel for each type. Only once you've done that do you decide what you want to do, and therefore ultimately whats the best car for you. Classes are everything, so the oh-so-common 2.0 Corsa will be eaten up by Escorts/Impreza's etc as you will be in the same class. Start small and work up - you'll be surprised how fast some 1300's/1400's and 1600's really are.
Most importantly you need to enjoy what your doing, but as a reality check, there are Mk1+2 Escorts in local "clubman" events worth £40k and WRC's worth £100k upwards earning top ten positions.
