Yes, I was reading about this on Neowin earlier. It's a great system.
For those not familiar, they're shipping the 3 versions "Home Basic", "Home Premium" and "Ultimate" on the same disc, and which version is installed depends on your key/license. If you feel you need a topup, you simply purchase the license for the higher version and it installs the version you just bought from the same disc. Easy stuff.
It's great if you can't afford one of the higher versions to start with, or you're unsure what features you'll actually use.
I'll be going for Premium or Ultimate, depending on what's not in Premium and the difference in ££.

Actually, because I already have XP Pro, it seems I can only upgrade to Vista Ultimate or Business. Thanks for that, Microsoft.

lol.
i wonder how easy it will be to 'upgrade' from XP?
i might consider upgrading to the top version of Vista so long as i know drivers are all ready etc

I guess it's for Home users who don't use the computer a lot and don't really need too many fancy features. At least it's not the Starter Edition.

im sure it wont be long before its cracked and people are able to get the full version working off the CD.
Saying that, more and more stuff is going 'online' now and its becoming increasing harder to get stuff for an illegal copy of windows

i just hope they are bearing in mind gamers too for this OS.
It seems like they are concentrating massively on security, completely rewritten the kernel too.
I hope it doesnt fuck up online gaming.

I don't think even Microsoft could make a mistake like that.
I am intruiged to see what performance hit/gain, if any, is encountered as a result of seperating the graphics drivers and the kernel.

why have they seperated the video drivers from the kernel i cannot see any logical point in this, since the drivers will still have to be stored on the physical drive? you cant just put something on a HDD and not expect its process to not be recorded ? how would the system know that a graphics card was installed if its not part of the kernel? i would love to know how this works...

I might have described it wrong, but it's so that if the graphics driver crashes, it can be restarted without affecting the rest of the computer.

it will still have to part of the windows kernel though, since this is the fundamentals that every o/s since win2k relies upon. perhaps it has some special interupt request where it can interact with the northbridge exclusively. but then this begs the question of hardware compatibility with this 'feature'

Its built from the ground up for security and stability.
The graphics drivers are outside the kernel to prevent system wide crashes as james said.
It won't have any performance implications.
Vista has been quoted as being faster for gaming though.
You'll all need to buy hdcp graphics cards anyway to watch stuff at high res so you'll have the latest anyway.

outside the kernel? literally? so how does it compute with the rest of the system?

Its all modular like good coding should be.
There will be plenty info out there on it and i've not got time atm to look.
Everything is built so the crashing/attack etc of one component doesn't affect the system as a whole.
You can install new drivers without needing a restart in most cases as well.

It means that the graphics kernel runs at a different user level to the main kernel, too.

And as to the original post.
I doubt it'll be cheap.
I'd say it'll be just the same as moving between home and pro etc just now.
It's not ms that will be doing it either.
It will go to an oem like dell or sony etc.

the only obvious disadvantage to moving the UI out of the kernel is it becomes hardware dependant.
If you have a lower spec PC you will struggle in general.
am i right in assuming this?

Only the fancy aero effects will require a decent graphics card.
They will be able to turned off.
UI will be fine apart from that.
