TBH diesel is so expensive and the MPG of modern petrol engines is so good i dont think it makes a difference. Steer clear of old mechanical diesels.

1.9 Golfs are okay...quite puntchy around town but miss the rev's for overtaking & speedier driving imo.

My impreza used to be £70 a week im now driving a 1.2 clio & doing the same miles for £25

Id expect a 1.9 diesel to be about the same as a 1.2 clio maybe a little better on fuel

It was a better saving when diesel still cost less than petrol, but it's a good saving on long journeys still. Especially if you're a bit heavy with the right foot.

Yeh the golfs are lovely, but for a GTi version it would be more than i wanna pay as will want to put some money away towards deposit. So about £3K max on a car.

I have gone diesel as I do at least 300 miles a week.

I was looking at Golf GT TDIs, but the average 45mpg.

My Clio 1.5 DCi 80, averages 65mpg, and if driven like a complete grandad I have seen it up to 75mpg on the trip computer. Its also only Insurance group 4, and £85 a year to tax
