Hiya guys thought i'd enquire about 106 GTI's (for a change) Anyway the time has finally come for me to get one, I'm spending between 2500 to 5000 on one and I know the condition of these cars between these prices varies considerably. However, i'm going to look at a couple over the course of the weekend ones a T reg with 64,000 miles and a W reg with 50,000 (Both cost between 2500-T reg and 3800-w reg). Any common faults or things I should be looking out for when buying? Any advice welcome, cheers in advance

Just make sure they idle correctley when driving and standing; reving high in both. Aaprt for sensors i think the only other thing to notes is gearboxes are weak and leaking oil from rocker cover. Ive had 3 now and they are fun cars

driveshafts and loose cv boots if your CV goes you need a whole new drivshaft as they cant be replaced
front wishbones and droplinks are also quite common
engine wise just the usuall really if looked after should have no major hassles

I still think you should spend the extra and get a Lupo GTi

look for trouble getting into 2nd indicates selector rod problem, common fault and recall on most models however not all were done
listne for noises from the gearbox, cutting out when idling (although most do this anyway), indicates lambda sensor issues, £90 dealer job

forgot to say flashing airbag light, often the sensors under the seat get dirty and trigger it, no biggie though

Thought you might mate. I know the build quality of the Lupo, and the rarity of these cars is very tempting in comparison but, I really dont know if i can justify the extra ££££'s, when performance-wise the peugeot is possibly the quicker one (can of worms) AND they dont make a lupo in yellow

best thing i ever did was buy a gti, try and get one from a garage ith 6 months warrenty, 12 months MOT, fair enough it cost me an extra £250 compared to a private sale!

106s in yellow do look nice and they are faster than the Lupo.
If you cant stretch your budget then the 106 isn't a bad choice.
But if you can afford to then defo defo defo go for a VAG and sacrifice a bit of speed for a better car in terms of comfort, build and reliability and it'll still go round corners like its on rails!

cheers matt. That's what it all comes down to unfortunately, budget and 5k is my absolute limit as i usually pay monthly (DD) for my insurance but now i have some money and it's not loads I wanna pay for a years insurance out right to save on the monthlies and i gotta pay for holiday with the missus  and leave some away for a rainy day so a Lupo's a no go at the moment. They still seem quite highly priced the cheapest one i found is on the trader at the moment for just under 6000 i think.

ive not long sold my 106 . . .
the things i recomend u do before u buy it is first,
have quite a long test drive, offer to pay petrol on test drive. because mine kept cutting out and cutting out and reving etc but sometimes it never.
i no i shudnt have done this but i sold mine while it was still cutting out and reving, luckily it never did it when the guy test drove it. i had it in different garages 8 times and no one could fix it. im a member on pgac and there are alot of people with the same problem.
check if the bodykit is properly attached. if the sunroof leaks, which it probably will lol
check the suspension and if u hear a rattling it could be snapped axles ? both of mine went
and check all the usual things u check for when buyin a car

noise from rear end over bumps usually indicates wheel bearings are on the way out, new rear beam needed at about £400, like mine!

also sunroof seals, check around the area and in footwells for signs that it many have leaked.
Quite a few common faults But good value for money car IMO

Well.... There's plenty no shortage of common faults to look out for. Hopefully I'll get lucky and get a well looked after one and not a duffer in disguise. Cheers for everything guys

also getting a GTI too, only spending upto 3500, there seams to be alot of people think there woth more than they are realy.

yeah check they idle properly,
mine developed problem with temperature sensor that would suddenly think engine was colder than it was and overfuel.
also alarm, mine cost over £200 over liftime of ownership, for the money could of got decent cat 1
sunroof check for leaks
cambelt is due around 74k
check indictaor relay/stalk as mine would randomly start ticking
check for any smell of petrol
check for any knocking noises under car
mine cost me well over 1k to repair over a year
