yes, as long as you dont solely do MoTs, you'd need to be a regular backstreet garage too....

What is an Authorised Examiner?

An Authorised Examiner (AE) is a person or company that is approved by the VI on application to carry out MOT Testing of specified vehicle classes.

Who can apply?

Any person, partnership, company or designated councils can apply to become an MOT Authorised Examiner by filling out a form (VT1) or (VT2) for designated councils, available from any VI office or downloadable online at www.via.gov.uk or our downloads page.

Requirements

Each applicant to register as an AE must have at least one person within the organisation that has attended an approved course of instruction that will cover the testers responsiblities, admin arrangements and disciplinary and appeal processes. The course is provided by the VI and will make the attendee aware of their role within the MOT Testing scheme.

Exemptions

If, when the application was received the same applicant was an AE at other premises, the AE training requirement does not apply.

What Equipment is Required to MOT Test Vehicles?

It is essential that you have the neccessary equipment for mot testing, and also that it meets the required standard and has been approved by the VI.

Here is a list of Essential Equipment and Tools

A vehicle lifting table or an inspection pit and associated equipment as approved
Approved roller brake Test equipment
Approved emission Test equipment
Approved headlamp beam setting equipment
Other small hand tools as specified by the Vehicle Inspectorate
An inspection lamp.

because MoTs cost the garage a fee, and then you have wages/bills to pay too, so you dont make a massive amount of profit from your 40 pound charge

and you wont have a constant stream of MoT applicants have you EVER seen a dedicated MoT test centre?

What Premises are Required?

The Vehicle Inspectorate is relatively flexible where premises are concerned, especially as regulations allow for different layouts.

There are mainly two things to be concerned with - Minimum distances between the pit and main test equipment and proven security measures regarding the storing of "blank" mot certificates and the current "in use" book.

Obviously the mot test bay will also require a minimum standard, a list is shown below;



Test bay must be suitable housed in a weather proof building. (not required to be draft free)
Testing facilities must be free from excessive oil contamination, noise, and exhaust fumes.
Equipment must be arranged so that mot testing can be done efficiently, other areas of the garage must not hinder the testing process in any way.
Safe, unobstructed easy access to and from the test site must be available. Vehicles should be able to enter and leave the mot test site in a forward direction.
Inspection facilities must be available - including underside access to cars.
A warm and weather proof public waiting room clearly identified. Where the mot testing can be clearly and fully observed without interruption except for road testing. (should accommodate at least 2 people)

yes the MOT station i go to is dedicated, does not handle anything other than MOT inspections.

seen a unit near by my house...

wouldnt mind starting up a garage, mot test centre.

I wouldnt work there myself though... so would have to be profitable enough pay some wages

just car i think, never seen any commercial vehicles there and i drive past it about 4 times a day. he jused to be a garage years a go mind, but stopped doing that.

But AK then you have your tools , ramps, staff etc.

Can't see it being easy with all the competition etc.

Unless you targeted a particular type of mechanic i.e sports/performance cars ?

it would be targetted, but wouldnt turn away 'normal' trade.

SVA centres.... what the craic with them (ESVA too)

Tools and ramps would just be an initial outlay.... not too bad

Staff - yes... thats why it would have to be profitable enough to run without me working there for no reward

to set up a test centre would cost somewhere in the reigon of 15 to20k

you need mot approved ramp £4k ish
roller brake tester £4k ish
head light beam setter £1.5k
emissions computer £6k for the sun dga2500 like i got
mot assensment tools £80
jacking beam £1k ish

anything to do with mot testing is more money that standard stuff

also premises need to be inspected by vosa as they tell you where to put brake rollers and ramps etc etc

also loads mor money to be had out of class VII than class IV

u could always get a bigger unit and make a little bit of it a bodyshop or rent that bit out to someone and then you can offer an all in one shop!

hate bodyshops.... so no... and the fact that bigger units normally mean more rent!!

The three mentioned above are 7000 to 16000 a year
