how big is a standard one?
mine is gay, it's 4.4m x 2m.
how much do standard size (and detatched from the house) ones cost to build, if the foundations are already there??

The foundations that are allready there aren't going to be wide/long enough if you are wanting to go bigger Rob!
I did some drawings for my bosses double garage. Its faced with Lakeland Stone and has a few windows, electric roll up door and storage space level. Think it cost him 12k but its a big garage and it wasn't square due to the shape of his garden boundary so that increased the cost of building/designing it.
it looks like a swiss cottage at the end of his garden

You got any local "Lock up's" near you? Lots of people use those to work on cars if they don't have a garage. Much cheaper too

My next door neighbour had a timber garage built at the start of this year.
He had the foundations put down by a contractor then a company manufactured the garage in a factory, brought it to him on a flat bed lorry as a flat pack then they put it up for him. Only took them 6 hours. Included double doors and the windows were prebuilt in and a felt pitched roof.
Its quite big for a single garage, has his Porsche in there with plenty of room around it so he can work on it.
Maybe a cheaper option than a traditional block garage...

we've got a timber summer house that is probably the size of a triple garage, and that hasnt rotted away in the last 15yrs!!

We ripped down my old timber framed - asbestos garage this summer, thinking of having a new one built but for the money, god, we may as well have a concrete space!

asbestos is fine. it's all a myth
the garage is not a problem now, the car i have my eye on is 4325mm long
