Stupidly only noticed when we were up there the other day, all i can see are just the beams for the roof, no insulation or anything, there is some on the floor of the loft - is that enough?

Not really any need to have it inbetween the roof members if the loft floor has insulation unless you are planning on making the loft a useable space. e.g. bedroom

Most older houses are like that, have just checked mine (4 years old) and mines the same (beams showing and just a covering in between.

blimey, thought it was newer than that.
I've only been up into my loft twice, warm as fcuk up there previous owners haven't put any flooring down so there's space up there for a few suitcases and a christmas tree box
Might try and sort it soon... funds permitting.

Wonder what kind of wood I would need to place across the beams that would be strong enough to hold someone's weight... ?

What for just going up now and then as a storage space or are you talking converting it into a bedroom?

If its a newer house your not meant to floor the loft or put any weight up there...beams are too thin.
I just slung the old internal doors up there when I replaced them & laid them over the rafters, use them to stack the suitcases & junk on
