Basically at present I'm an apprentice joiner , been doing it almost two years.
But I'm totally,totally sick of it. Ive completley lost interest !
I'm so much more interested in cars/engines etc (moreso since doing my engine swap) and think I'd like to something along these lines now ?
I'm 19 and wondering how hard it is to get into a mechanic's apprenticeship ? (I can imagine very as the one I'm in was hard to get)
Also , what is the pay like , whilst an apprentice and once qualified ?
Any advice you can offer would be great

I think you will go down in salary alot and never be able to earn as much as if you were doing joinery/carpentry.

What was so hard about getting your current one? I did an apprenticeship but I work for my dad so a job placement was no problem.
I should imagine pay will be very similar to what you were on with your joiner apprenticeship, trouble is if you have worked your way up the pay scale being a joiner you may have to take a cut changing careers.

Also I think a joiner will earn more money, plus its alot easier to get set up on your own if you decide thats what you want.

Computers have always been a hobby of mine and now I work in IT and love it but IT is a very large field so if I get bored of what I'm doing, I will just do something else in IT

mechanics dont have the best job imo. dirty not much money. altho plently of jobs out there
joiner plenty of jobs, more money, maybe cleaner???
id stick with the joinery

To be honest, its not a great job. But I get payed more than my mate who is same age, did the same amount of time at college and he is a joiner. For what I do I get paid well but I can't see me being a mechanic all my life anyway.

You'd get sick of doing boring manual labour on cars just as fast.
Its not all engine swaps and stuff, its crap, dirty work, like oil changes and brake pads. EVERY day.

Yeah Robins right, its very rare that you do an engine change or something like that and if something like that does come in, chances are the more experianced mechanic will do it anyway. Time is money and all that, what may take you 6 hours may take 4 hours with someone else doing it.

Why did you go for joinery in the first place? Don't forget if your bored of joinery after 2 years, you could quite easily get bored of being a mechanic after 2 years.

car mechanics is pretty tedious. It's nothing like what is shown on the fast and the furious

when I qualified at Ford I left because the pay was crap and went back to college to do something else.
Only reason I have gone back to cars/engines after all these years is because with me owning the company I can make good money and do what I love doing. Do it for someone else though? no chance.

Because I was really interested in it  And though I could make good money in the end.
I know I could get bored thats what bugs me.

Maybe for the best, if you enjoy messing with cars and do it for a job and get bored. You will never want to look at one again let alone mess about swapping engines etc.
When do you finish your apprenticeship? Might be worth looking for somewhere else to go and get them giving you proper jobs not just the crappy ones that no-one else wants to do.
