Any where online that can do tests to see how well you would be able to run vista?

the rating system is a bit stupid to be honest, you could have a top range system, but it will score you on your weakest component, ie could have dual core processor, 2 gig ddr ram, but with a crappy gfx card will only score 1 or 1.5

Want to give this a go, but not gonna use it as my only O/S atm.

Kinda cheated on the whole PC spec thing and brought a new Dell instead

So can install vista on this PC and give it a proper test

Doesn't work quite as simply as that.

Although a weak component will bring you down.

Actually it does. Quoting Windows Help:

"Each hardware component receives an individual subscore. Your computer's base score is determined by the lowest subscore."

I like Vista so far, but the 3D stuff isn't anything amazing -- nothing that hasn't been done before (and some might say better) by Compiz/Xgl on Linux (Google for SLED 10 3d).

Vista with Aero enabled:

The lowest score pulls it down but its not just a simple average.

The algorithm to work out the overall score is more complicated than that.

Funnily enough my scores are:

4.6, 4.5, 3.7, 3.3, 4.1

Now funnily enough the "3.3" (my worst score) has been highlighted in the window, and also happens to be my base score.

I'm only quoting Windows Help above, but it sounds feasible.

I wasn't aware you had the source code to establish exactly how it was calculated. Sorry

i like it.
I had a score of 5.5 and i found it a much faster OS to use than XP.
I like the shutting down, starting up, the ncier looking UI.

It aint my main OS tho

I have found it to be fairly good. The main limitation being
a) Drivers for it i.e. NVidia current release is very poor in comparison to thier XP ones, My Gigabit card is not currently supported
b) Some software compatibility issues.

If it were not for the driver issues I would probably use it as my primary OS.

Supprised none of the Apple lovers have mentioned about everything being copied from osX (which it hasnt)
