Hello,
I shall be putting a 2 ltr into my corsa later this year, and thinking of buying a engine soon so that I can get it tidied up ready to go in.

Now I know everyone puts the C20XE into corsa/novas etc because they are v.good. Only thing is I had a late cavalier sri with the X20XEV which was quite fast.

Question open for discussion is, what would people recommend and the reasons?

XE's are very good slightly more power, but the XEV is newer and there becoming more and more available.

Any thoughts welcome,

XE is better all round really. It was made to go fast

All the rally boys round my way use the XE and those fellas know what they are doing.

XEV, be different! Essentially the same engines, but the XEV (being more modern) is more restricted due to revised EU emission legislation in the mid-nineties. You'll get one with less miles on too (in theory).

see now thats what I have been thinkin, plus you can pick them up pretty cheap (await the comment "cus knowone wants one :lol

I thought would be a bit different don't see many, and tuning bits are about too

beware of ecotec with high miles tho, i looked at alot before i decided to go xe and around the 100k in the scrappys they sounded like shit etc etc

wow someone in this thread has a clue.... cant stand this whole eco-wreck attitude..

If you havent owned one then I don't see how you can comment on them being shit.. Ive had an xe and I have an XEV just now..

Fair do's the XEV is slightly more restricted due to the egr gubbins etc but essentialy they are the same as an XE. No reason whatsoever why an ecotec would be more unreliable than an XE. If anything they will be more reliable due to their age, chance of getting a low miler etc..

Mine never misses a beat, and all I have done is a service, timing belt and water pump..

Back to the original question I would personaly go for whatever is available to you, but just dont let the eco-wreck myths put you off.

Rant over, and I await all the idiots out there to tell me how ecotecs are shite.. prove it and I'll listen..

More than likely due to them not being looked after, for example XE's love to rattle when there cold..

wot gets me is the number of corsa owners not necessarily on here than run ecotec into the ground but are driving an ecotec 1.6 doesnt make sense. my 1.2 ecotec i had was mint bar needing an afm in 3 years never gave me any problems..

i was thinkin the corsa is ecotec era and so why not use one, I had one in my cav like I said rolling roaded the same as a XE power 3 times on different rollers and never had any probs

my only experience of ecotec engines tells me they're shite, my 12v went through sensors, afm's, icv's and the like for fun. but as said it was a 12v, so may just be that particular engine thats just shite

X20xev all the way!
Much smoother engine, makes good torque too. And a LOT of tuning potential, just as much as Xe has.
It is said they have a few problems with sensors failing etc, but XE's get porous heads etc too.
The management on the xev is more modern and efficient too.

And people dont ask £300 for them, like they do for a 150k, in need of a rebuild, 15+ yr old XE

I would say the later x20.

are very tunable engines, strong and reliable. or even better go for a z18xe. with a few choice tuning goodies I recon they will make a reliable and fun 160 bhp and its a rather easy conversion into a corsa B.

Do you know of anyone that has done this conversion already? or put the X20XEV in. are there any problems compared to a normal XE

XEV, newer more torque, more easy to drive.
Do have smaller ports yes but at steaper angle. Ask QED why they use them?? never had an astra gsi come past me driving my brothers mk3 astra XEV,
