Well vista is a very good OS from my experience but only having 1gb of ram Im really not getting the best experience of it. It hangs and freezes when trying to work stuff out and is just generally too slow on my laptop!

I will come back to vista no doubt. But it will be when I have either a better specced laptop or a desktop PC with like 4gb ram

I agree fully

I had RC2 going on mine and with 1.5GB of RAM and an Athlon64 3200+ it was still struggling by.

I run vista on a 1gig dell laptop with onboard graphics and it runs aero etc and runs along at least as fast as xp.

Agreeing that your RC version ran slow isn't saying much is it?

I will be moving my main pc over to vista as soon as I get an lcd.

Only thing thats stopping me is the hassle I have to go to to get movies and tv shows to show properly on my tv.

Can't do what i need to do in the vista drivers.

I have no choice to change now

As I posted that message my anti virus did an update so I agreeed to restart the computer. Now vista has deleted its boot records or something. It wont boot and it wont repair itself so looks like I have to do a fresh install of XP!! FFS.

I think im going to download a linux distribution that can be run from a CD so I can try and save some of my files like all my uni work etc!

You must have one hell of an advanced phone. The most I have seen out there is around 256MB on a phone.

Unless your talking about solid state memory which of course is slower than a disk

This is proving to be quite problematic for me

I really dont want to have to wipe my laptop as I have no recent back up of any of my data!!

There are a couple important docs on there and god knows how many pictures that I dont want to loose

I have tried booting the knoppix distribution from a CD but it only allows me use of a VERY limited shell beacuse it cant find something it needs..... Surely everything it needs should be on the CD?!

Are there any decent linux distributions that are perfect for this sort of situation?

Write your data to another computer on a network, pen drive, card reader and some camera or phone memory?

How much data do you have to save?

I've got Mandrake Linux on as another dual boot, yes i have 5 operating systems I'm a sad git but nevermind

The Knoppix distribution is used by forensics, it won't store anything on your hard drive but will allow you to access it. What have you done to it exacally?

if you cant get your data off our drive without formating just format your drive and then use an external hard disk to recover it using file scavenger ive done it plenty of times on mine just takes a while to get it all back .

You will need an external hard disk as it will not recover to the same disk . This is a last resort really will recover data from formats without a problem. Usually i do a quick format and then recover.

Works if your system is NTFS

Well I have used knoppix in the past to get stuff off a shagged windows pc. Just for ome reason knoppix just dosnt want to boot up on my laptop, it cant find its file system!!

I have about 1gb of stuff I really want and about 10gb of stuff that would be nice to keep (some recently DL'd TV series etc)

I have a 4gb usb key so it isnt too bad.

Im just trying to boot knoppix using every cheat code they give you hoping to find a way to make it boot properly

So far 'failsafe' is the only one that makes it boot properly but even then I cant use my mouse and it only loads up the background and no buttons or anything
