Would be close in a straight line, I've drive a Mini Cooper 1.6 16v and been out in a Civic Sport 1.6 16v the other day and I would say they were more or less equal, maybe even the Civic having a slight edge.

Cooper:
115bhp
0-60mph - 8.9secs
Top Speed - 124mph
1150kg
Civic:
108bhp
0-60mph - 10.0secs
Top Speed - 116mph
1170kg
So the Mini is lighter, and quicker stats wise. He was talking bollox if you ask me.

That info was from Parkers.co.uk though, so might be worth checking out on the manufacturer website so you're 100% sure

I think some people are talking about 2 different types of Works. You can get a Mini Cooper/Cooper S with S-works kit and tuning THEN you can get the, wait for it, Mini Cooper John Cooper Works GP thing, which is stripped out and undoubtedly faster.
